Now it's official: Tom Brady is retiring

The 44-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, considered the greatest player in National Football League (NFL) history, announced his decision via Instagram. Brady enjoyed a 22-year career that included six championships with the New England Patriots and one with the Bucs.

Already had last Saturday ESPN citing anonymous sources reported that the decision had been made and Brady would end his career. Numerous colleagues, the NFL itself and even one of his companies then congratulated him on his outstanding career with seven Super Bowl victories. However, his agent Don Yee and Brady's father Tom Sr. immediately denied that a decision had already been made. On Monday, the superstar himself said in a podcast that he didn't yet know whether he would continue.

The father of the family was under contract with the Buccaneers for another season. He will no longer fulfill this requirement. The “GOAT” (Greatest of all time), as he is casually called, leaves behind a career statistic that no one will be able to break any time soon: seven titles and Vince Lombardi Trophies, as well as the records for the most yards through passes (84.520) and touchdowns (624), most wins in regular-season games (243) and in playoff games (35) and yards in a Super Bowl (505). He shaped his sport like no other Brady shaped his sport like no other and not only became a multi-millionaire, but also one of the US sports icons. In 2000, he was drafted in the sixth round with number 199. At the end of his famous career, “TB12” was in the Super Bowl final ten times, was five-time Super Bowl and three-time league MVP (most valuable player). For many, Brady is one of the best athletes on the planet.

With the New England Patriots, Brady was always one of the best teams in the league for 20 years, and in his first year after moving to the Buccaneers, he won the title again at the end of last season. The Bucs were the first team to win the championship in their own stadium - after not even winning a playoff game for 18 years before Brady's arrival. For sporting reasons, a resignation would not have been necessary. Now family matters By the end of the season, Brady showed that the oldest player in the league still had it. In the basic round, he had the best values for touchdowns, successful passes, pass attempts and yards thrown. In the play-off against the Los Angeles Rams, he almost made a comeback possible for the Buccaneers, for which he is feared and respected in the league. However, the 27:30 defeat was the last appearance of the US football hero. This is now fixed.

Now Brady devotes himself to his family with supermodel Gisele Bündchen and their two children Vivian and Benjamin. Brady also has a son from a previous relationship.
