Without the Packers: NFL playoffs are certain

On Sunday (local time) the Packers lost 16:20 (9:6) at home to the Detroit Lions in the American Football League.

Rodgers was tackled to the ground by the Lions defense on his final pass attempt. At the end of the third quarter, the quarterback gave the Packers a 16:13 lead with a touchdown pass to Allen Lazard. In the final period, Jamaal Williams turned the game in favor of the Lions with his second touchdown. Although the 39-year-old Rodgers still has a contract for the coming season, the 2010 Super Bowl champion had previously stated that he had still decided whether he would continue playing.

With the Packers' defeat, the Seattle Seahawks secured the final playoff ticket in the NFC. The team around quarterback Geno Smith won 19:16 (6:13, 16:16) after overtime against the Los Angeles Rams. Kicker Jason Myers became the match winner when he forced overtime with a field goal two minutes before the end of the fourth quarter and scored the field goal to win the game.

In the AFC, the Miami Dolphins qualified for the playoffs for the first time in six years thanks to an 11:6 (3:3) win against the New York Jets. The Dolphins benefited from the New England Patriots' simultaneous 23:35 (14:14) defeat at the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills won the first game after their defender Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest on the previous game day. Hamlin watched the game from the hospital and shared a photo of himself on Twitter with the words “Gametime.” Before the game, Hamlin spoke to his teammates via video call in the locker room.

The Bills will face the Miami Dolphins in the first round of the playoffs. If the Buffalo team reached the AFC finals against the first-place Kansas City Chiefs, that game would take place at a neutral site. In the AFC, the Jacksonville Jaguars also face the Los Angeles Chargers and the Cincinnati Bengals face the Baltimore Ravens.

In the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles have a first-round bye. There the San Francisco 49ers meet the Seattle Seahawks, the Minnesota Vikings face the New York Giants, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers face the Dallas Cowboys. The so-called “wildcard playoffs” begin on January 14th (local time).
