Serie A begins with a new format in Bolzano at the weekend

For 10 years, SSV Bozen has been the most successful South Tyrolean club in the Italian badminton team championship. SSV Bozen has qualified for the play-off of the best four five times in a row and was named runner-up five times. Last year, the people of Bolzano qualified for the European Cup for the first time because Italy, as hosts, was allowed to field two teams.

New format this year

SSV Bozen would like to extend this successful series, but Serie A has a completely new format this year. The premiere follows this Saturday and Sunday in the new triple gymnasium of the Stifter middle school on Armando-Diaz-Straße/corner of Wentergasse in Bolzano.

In Bolzano, more homegrown, same goals

With even more homegrown players, SSV Bozen is tackling the top Italian league, but the goals remain the same. The play-off of the best four is the minimum goal. Captain Marco Mondavio and the Bulgarian Dimitar Yanakiev should get the points for the men. In the women's category, Claudia Gruber is making her comeback after a maternity break. At their side, the three promising young talents Maja Fallaha (16), Katharina Fink (15) and Yasmine Hamza (14) will continue to gain experience. There is also veteran Erika Stich.

Milan is the big favorite again this year

“Of course Milan is the big favorite again, we’re not kidding ourselves,” says Claudia Gruber. "But all the other teams have to beat us first." This year the basic round consists of three concentrated weekends where all 9 Serie A teams play against each other in one place. The Italian association wants to offer a concentrated load of badminton in one place. The start takes place in Bolzano. Four meetings will take place at the same time in the new Stifterhalle on Saturday at 15 p.m. and 18 p.m. and on Sunday at 10 a.m. In addition to SSV Bozen, ASV Mals and SC Meran are also taking part in the race from South Tyrol. As usual, there will be five matches per encounter (men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, mixed). The remaining games will take place on the 10th/11th. February in Chiari (Brescia) and on 17/18. March in Palermo. The first 4 qualify for the play-off for the Italian championship title on 7/8. April in Milan. Admission to games is free

Entry this weekend to the Stifterhalle in Bolzano is free. Badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992. Shuttlecocks can reach speeds of more than 400 km/h during a smash.

Serie A begins with a new format in Bolzano at the weekend

The first matchday of the Badminton Serie A will take place in Bolzano on Saturday and Sunday. From a South Tyrolean perspective, SSV Bozen, ASV Mals and SC Meran are also taking part. The game is played in a new format.
