Badminton players excel in Portugal

Another strong performance by the individual Italian champions from 2018 and 2019, Katharina Fink and Yasmine Hamza, on the international stage.

The 17-year-old Fink won bronze in the singles and reached the doubles final with Hamza. In the junior world rankings, the two flagships of the South Tyrol Badminton School are ranked better than ever before.

“That was a really strong performance from both of them,” says coach Csaba Hamza happily. Just two weeks after the Czech Republic, Katharina Fink once again reached the semi-finals of a junior world rankings tournament. Until the semi-finals, Fink (just like Hamza played for SSV Bozen) only had a small wobble. In the semifinals of the best four she was against the eventual tournament winner, but the Swiss Dounia Pelupessy had no chance.

Hamza narrowly missed out on an individual medal. First she clearly defeated the two strong Spaniards Ruth Veiguela and Lucia Rodriguez in two sets. Hamza had lost to Rodriguez twice over the past twelve months. In the quarterfinals, Hamza had already led 1:16 in the third set against number 10 seed Amy Tan before the favorite from the Netherlands was able to prevail.

Judith Mair and Chiara Passeri win gold In the doubles final there was a final with two duos from Italy for the first time in a junior world ranking tournament.

Judith Mair from Mals and her teammate Chiara Passeri were able to prevail against Fink/Hamza. Mair/Passeri celebrated Italy's first tournament victory in girls' doubles since Anna von Hepperger and Ira Tomio exactly ten years ago.

The Portuguese Junior International in Caldas da Rainha was very well attended with participants from 19 nations.

South Tyrol's badminton players have once again made people sit up and take notice. Katharina Fink from Bolzano won bronze in the individual, her teammate Yasmine Hamza made it to the quarterfinals. Judith Mair from Mals and her teammate Chiara Passeri won gold in the doubles.
