Hamza and Fink shine in EL Salvador

The long trip to America was definitely worth it for Hamza (18) and Fink (19). Hamza finished third and reached the podium for the first time at a world ranking tournament in the International Series category. In the doubles, the two women from Bolzano only had to admit defeat in the final. As of tomorrow, they will be among the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time. At the end of the year in places 184 (Hamza) and 192 (Fink) in singles and 100 in doubles for the first time. The two best players in Italy have improved by more than 100 positions in both disciplines in one year. Without the pandemic, they would now be in the top 100 in the individual category, because because of the pandemic, the results of the past three years are currently counted instead of just the last 52 weeks. “I’m happy for Katharina and Yasmine’s great results,” says coach Csaba Hamza. “Now it’s time to work hard in all areas for two months. I am convinced that they will reach the next level if they manage to consistently perform at their level.” Hamza and Fink want to be the first South Tyrolean badminton players to qualify for the Olympic Games. At the International Series in El Salvador (comparable to a well-manned Challenger in tennis), the two top players from the SBS - Südtirol Badminton School (tesserated for SSV Bozen) won their first medals. Hamza defeated No. 1 seed Nikte Sotomayor of Guatemala (BWF No. 105) in straight sets en route to the semifinals. In the semifinals she had to admit defeat to the eventual winner Ishida Jaiswal (USA). Fink narrowly failed in three sets in the quarterfinals against number 2 seed Disha Gupta (USA). In the doubles, Fink/Hamza prevailed in the semifinals against Srivedya Gurazada and Ishida Jaiswal. The Indian-American pairing had won the tournament in Mexico the previous week. In their first final at an International Series, Fink/Hamza ultimately lost to the Brazilians Santa Lima/Tamires Santos in three sets. It was still enough to make it into the top 100 for the first time. Another South Tyrolean, Judith Mair, took part in El Salvador. The Malser reached the quarter-finals in the singles. In doubles she won the bronze medal with Martina Corsini.
