Katharina Fink shows off her talent at the Junior European Championships

Fink had already impressed in the team tournament and contributed to the Azzurri's second place in the group. Fink and Co. won 5-0 against Finland and Israel. They suffered a 0-5 defeat against eventual bronze medal winners Germany in the fight for group victory. Fink was the only one who managed to win a set. European Championship gold went to France.

In the individual tournament, the 15-year-old, who plays for SSV Bozen, was the only one to achieve two victories - and that against competitors, some of whom were two years older. After victories against the respective No. 1 from Portugal and Iceland, Fink shone against Anastasiya Prozorova. The Ukrainian, ranked 12th, will soon take part in the Youth Olympic Games. Despite two match points, Fink lost 21:8, 21:23, 17:21. With three out of five gold medals, France was the strongest nation. “Katharina played very well, especially against the Ukrainian. She now knows the top European level among juniors. The goal is a medal in two years. That’s what we’re working towards,” says coach Csaba Hamza. Fink is currently number 3 in the European U17 rankings. Fink is also the reigning Italian champion. Italy only has a real chance of an Olympic berth in the individual competition.

Malser duo in the round of 16 The other South Tyroleans also knew how to impress at the Junior European Championships. The Malser duo Simon Köllemann and Lisa Sagmeister made it to the round of 16 thanks to two wins. Köllemann was also able to win a match in the boys' doubles, as did Judith Mair (Mals) in the mixed doubles.
