SSV Bozen became Italian badminton champions for the first time

SSV Bozen finished the regular season in first place for the first time and was therefore the favorite on paper. The SSV suffered its only defeat against its final opponent Marabadminton (1:4). The decisive match in the final was probably the women's doubles with Katharina Fink (18) and Yasmine Hamza (17). The two women from Bolzano delivered a strong performance. They won the match against Gianna Stimmelich and the Danish doubles expert Sara Hansen Lundgaard after almost an hour of play and put the SSV on the winning path. In the regular round, this duel went to the Sardinian club. The Bulgarian duo Ivan Rusev/Daniel Nikolov surprisingly won the men's doubles and increased their score to 2-0. This gave Katharina Fink a great chance to get the decisive third point in the women's singles. But the favored Fink had to admit defeat to Stiglich. Nikolov had the next chance. The Bulgarian champion clearly lost the first set against the Dane Christopher Vittoriani, but then played to his experience and fitness and finally won 13:21, 21:17, 22:20. “This is a historic moment for SSV Bozen and for South Tyrolean badminton,” said coach Csaba Hamza happily. The women’s doubles in particular were really great.” The title returns to South Tyrol after a long dry spell This was the first time since 2004 (SC Meran) that a South Tyrolean team had secured the Italian championship title. The title has been awarded since 1985. Bolzano is only the seventh club to be included in the winners' list. Merano is still the record champion with 13 titles. Mals (three times in the 80s) and Brixen (1990) were also Italian champions. For the second time in the club's history, SSV Bozen is taking part in the European Cup, which is now officially called the European Club Championships. These will take place from June 21st - 25th in Bialystok, Poland.
