Katharina Fink (18) and Yasmine Hamza (18) want to be the first South Tyroleans to qualify for the Olympic badminton tournament. They will lay the foundation for this in consultation with the Italian association at the SBS in South Tyrol and thus in their usual environment. At the same time, both will remain in close contact with the Olympic base in Milan. Optimal training conditions Fink and Hamza find optimal training conditions in South Tyrol because the SBS, founded in 2015, is financially supported by the state as an elite funding project. The majority of South Tyrol's badminton talents are now training at the SBS under the direction of head coach Csaba Hamza. “We bring together the best players, promote them individually and, in addition to badminton training, also offer athletic and mental training at the highest level,” said SBS Vice President Günther Andergassen at the general meeting last week. In the youth sector, more than a third of the national players come from the SBS. “Players from Lombardy and Sicily have even moved to South Tyrol to attend school here and train at the SBS,” says Hamza happily. The SBS figureheads are Katharina Fink and Yasmine Hamza, who are number 113 in the world in doubles and 215 and 226 respectively in singles. Both are back from Denmark, where they were able to train with Lian Ying Zhang, the coach of Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen, among others . Katharina Fink previously shone at the Czech Open (International Series). Fink defeated Czech number 2 Tereza Svabikova in front of her Czech grandparents with 21:13, 15:21, 21:17 and thus reached the round of 132. Svabikova is number XNUMX in the world and therefore the highest ranked European that Fink has won against so far. But the SBS is much more: At the Italian Youth Championships in Milan at the end of October, the SBS players won 24 medals, including eight gold - no one else was so successful. The SBS was represented in 13 of 20 finals. Yasmine Hamza (SSV Bozen/U19) and Marco Danti (Badminton Überetsch/U17) even achieved the title hat trick.
