Players criticize DEL sharply

Germany's ice hockey professionals are dissatisfied with the DEL's external image and the postponed start of the season again. At the weekend, the newly founded players' union SVE reacted with incomprehension, and national team captain Moritz Müller also sees significant damage to the image of German ice hockey. “A specific start date in November has become a glimpse into the unknown for you fans and us players,” the SVE posted a statement on social networks. The German Ice Hockey League postponed the start of the season for the second time on Friday - this time for an indefinite period. Instead, after hours of video conferencing between the 14 clubs, the league announced a declaration of intent to start “in the second half of December”. “That’s too vague for me,” criticized Müller on Saturday MagentaSport -Interview. Is the season completely canceled? When asked about a possible loss of image without playing, the 33-year-old captain of the Kölner Haie and SVE co-founder said: "I feel like it's big." Müller further clearly criticized the DEL's actions. “I would have liked to have been picked up as you would like to set up a game in mid-December. I don't know what will change between now and then." With this, the captain of the national team subliminally expressed what many fans now fear: that the season will be completely canceled this winter. The DEL is vehemently defending itself against this. “Everyone involved is aware of this exceptionally difficult situation. We will continue to do everything we can to start the new season. It is still important to pull out all the stops to put the clubs in a position where they can play ice hockey responsibly,” said DEL managing director Gernot Tripcke. From the start of the season, high running costs immediately arise. We then have almost 100% expenses, but hardly any predictable income from ticket and fan merchandise sales,” said the managing director of Düsseldorfer EG, Stefan Adam. For many clubs, spectator revenue accounts for around 80 percent of sales. With the current regulation of being able to play in front of a maximum of 20 percent of spectators of the respective hall capacity, many clubs do not see themselves in a position to run games economically. The DEL had therefore postponed the start of the season from mid-September to mid-November in the hope of being able to play in front of spectators again. The licensing in the summer was based on the assumption that normal audience income could be generated. The DEL wants to decide what to do next by mid-November at the latest. “One thing is certain for us: we are in favor of naming a concrete start date,” demanded the SVE in view of the lack of prospects.
