18 World Cup medals for South Tyrol this season

Dietmar Nöckler from Puster achieved his best placing at the Nordic World Ski Championships this year. He won silver in the team sprint with Federico Pellegrino and can now, after bronze in 2015, be proud of two World Championship medals. The 25-year-old biathlete Alexia Runggaldier from St. Christina provided another highlight from a World Cup perspective this season. With the bronze medal in the individual competition, she was able to win her first World Championship medal. Medal hope Dorothea Wierer did not achieve a top 3 placement at this year's Biathlon World Championships, but she came fifth in the overall World Cup ranking. The 24-year-old tobogganer Dominik Filehner, who was crowned double World Championships medalist, played a large part in the South Tyrolean haul. He won bronze in the individual sprint and single-seater and thus brought a medal in luge to South Tyrol for the first time since Armin Zöggeler. Local athletes have traditionally dominated the World Championships in natural track tobogganing: Gruber, Pinggera and Co. were able to win a total of five medals at the World Championships in Vatra Dornei, Romania. Of these, two gold and three silver. The excellent ski season of South Tyrol's speed men Paris and Fill was not rewarded with a medal at this year's World Championships. South Tyrol's snowboarders also came away empty-handed at the World Cup - however, March and Visentin impressed in the World Cup rankings. Half of the 18 World Cup medals were won by local young athletes. The 19-year-old ski jumper Alex Insam from Val Gardena, who has now reached the world class, won silver at this year's Junior World Championships in Soldier Hollow (USA).
