Benedikt Doll takes back the sprint world championship title – South Tyrolean

The first men's individual competition at the Biathlon World Championships in Hochfilzen couldn't have been more exciting: in an extremely close race, gold and silver were decided by 0,7 seconds at the finish - while Benedikt Doll came out on top, Johannes Thingnes Boe had to win “just” settle for silver. Doll and Boe laid the foundation for first and second place at the shooting range, where they were one of the few athletes to remain error-free. The duo then fought a thrilling long-distance duel on the cross-country ski trail, which the German ultimately won thanks to a strong final lap (in which he beat Boe by around ten seconds). In Hochfilzen, Doll was not only happy about his first individual World Cup gold medal, but also about his first ever World Cup victory in an individual race - the 26-year-old could not have chosen a better day for his first victory. The Frenchman Martin Fourcade completed the sprint podium. The overall World Cup leader, who had started the race as the top favorite, made two mistakes on the shooting range and thus lost all chances of gold. Thanks to the fastest time on the cross-country ski trail, Fourcade saved third place and thus secured his second medal at this World Championships. Windisch in 18th place, Hofer only 56th. The South Tyrolean biathletes Dominik Windisch and Lukas Hofer were unable to intervene in the medal decision. While Windisch kept the damage from his two penalty laps within limits thanks to a decent running performance, Hofer (also two mistakes at the shooting range) couldn't cope with the cross-country ski run at all and lost a total of 2.05 minutes to the day's winner Doll - a good starting position for the pursuit competition was therefore lost. On Sunday there are two medal decisions on the program in Hochfilzen with the two pursuit races for women (10.30 a.m.) and men (14.45 p.m.).
