World Cup Hochfilzen: Germany takes gold, Italy in fifth place

The women's relay was extremely exciting. Initially France was in the lead with Anais Chevalier. At the first change, Italy's starting runner Lisa Vittozzi (1 spare) was in second place, 7,5 seconds behind the French, while Germany, Vanessa Hinz, handed over to her teammate in third place. As a result, Italy fought its way to the top with the outstanding Federica Sanfilippo. While the competition had great difficulties at the shooting range, the 26-year-old from Ridnaun hit nine out of ten targets. Although “Fedi” wasn’t able to keep up with her competitors on the cross-country ski run, she still handed over the lead to Alexia Runggaldier, 6 seconds ahead of Germany and already 25,7 seconds ahead of Ukraine. Runggaldier cannot defend his lead – Wierer risks everything Alexia Runggaldier, however, couldn't get going. Clumsy on the trail, the 25-year-old from St. Christina had to reload twice while lying down. A little later, the bronze medalist in the individual competition also shot a ticket while standing. Now 29,4 seconds behind, Italy went into the final in sixth place. At the front, Germany ran a lonely race thanks to the phenomenal performance of Franzsika Hildebrand. Italy's final runner Dorothea Wierer kept up with the competition lying down, hit all five targets and reduced the gap to the medal positions. The decision in the fight for precious metal had to be made at the last shooting. While standing, Laura Dahlmeier had to reload twice, but still left the stadium in first place. Behind them, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and France hit all five targets, while Dorothea Wierer started quickly and made up time, but then left a target and lost valuable time due to the spare. This meant that the “Azzurre” were out of the race for the medals. Dahlmeier wins his tenth World Championship medal in a row Dahlmeier confidently wrapped up the German relay victory at the front. Behind them, Ukraine, France and the Czech Republic fought for silver and bronze. In the end, the Ukrainians with Olena Pidhrushna took silver, 1,7 seconds ahead of France, which had since slipped to eighth place after the second group. The “wooden medal” went to the Czech Republic, while Wierer crossed the finish line in fifth place. For Laura Dahlmeier, it was the tenth World Cup medal in a row. This is a new sole record after she had shared this record with the Norwegian Tora Berger until Friday. The World Cup in Hochfilzen continues on Saturday with the men's relay.
