Under the microscope: The South Tyroleans at the Nordic World Ski Championships

A total of nine local athletes are competing at the Nordic World Ski Championships, including one cross-country skier (Dietmar Nöckler), four ski jumpers (Manuela Malsiner, Elena Runggaldier, Lara Malsiner, Evelyn Insam), one ski jumper (Alex Insam) and three Nordic combined athletes (Samuel Costa, Armin Bauer and Lukas Runggaldier).

SKI JUMPING Manuela Malsiner: The 19-year-old can be expected to win a medal in Lahti. 2017 has been her year so far: In Zao she jumped onto a World Cup podium for the first time, took five more top 10 places and was crowned Junior World Champion three weeks ago. She couldn't be better prepared for her second World Cup.

Elena Runggaldier: Already contesting her fifth World Championship. Previous highlight: The silver medal in Oslo 2011. This year she consistently jumped into the top 20 (seven times).

Evelyn Insam: It is also the fifth World Cup for the 23-year-old. This year she jumped into the points eleven times, but there is still no breakout ahead.

Lara Malsiner: At the age of 16, she competed in her first World Championship – primarily to gain experience. She already showed her potential this year with a 15th place at the World Cup in Ljubno.

Alex Insam: Just like Manuela Malsiner, she gained a lot of self-confidence with a silver medal at the Junior World Championships in the USA. This year he took part in his first individual competition in Innsbruck. True to the motto “being there is everything,” he will take part in his first World Championship competitions in Lahti.

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING Dietmar Nöckler: The Puster native achieved his greatest success at a world championship in 2015 in Falun, Sweden, when he won bronze in the team sprint with Federico Pellegrino. In this discipline he also raced onto the podium at the Toblach stage in this year's World Cup season. Nöckler is expected to compete in the team sprint, over 15 kilometers classic and in the relay.

NORDIC COMBINATION Samuel Costa: This year he made his big breakthrough to the top of the world. In Seefeld he jumped and ran onto the podium twice and made it into the top 10 five more times. Has realistic chances of winning a medal.

Armin Bauer: This year he was mainly used in the Continental Cup, i.e. in the “second league”. In 2015, he narrowly missed a medal in fourth place in the team competition at the World Championships in Falun together with Samuel Costa, Lukas Runggaldier and Alessandro Pittin. Competing in his fifth World Cup.

Lukas Runggaldier: This year he also commuted between the Continental Cup and the World Cup. Drawn attention to himself with a second place at the CoC stage in Höydalsmo and can compete in his fifth world championship in Lahti.
