15 Olympic medals: Little South Tyrol continues the series

In 1964, Siegfried Mair and Walter Fremdsdorfer won the bronze medal in the doubles toboggan event in Innsbruck. South Tyrol's impressive series began with this medal. Since then, lugers, ski racers, biathletes, bobsledders and other winter sports athletes from our country have won at least one medal at every edition of the Winter Games.

More consistent than Switzerland Only nine major winter sports powers such as Germany, Russia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, USA, Canada, Austria and France can boast the same consistency that small South Tyrol has always won winter Olympic medals since 1964. But not Switzerland, the speed skating-crazy Dutch or even the Czechs and the British.

If you add the silver medal from four-man bobsleigh pusher Renato Mocellini from Vahrn in Cortina in 1956 and the two most recent bronze medals from Dominik Windisch & Co. in Pyeongchang, South Tyrol's winter Olympic haul has reached 42 medals. Exactly half of them - 21 - are made of bronze, 11 are made of gold and 10 are made of silver. Since 2006 1x gold, 1x silver, 9x bronze The “preponderance” of bronze medals came about mainly in the recent past. The last gold medal won by a South Tyrolean was Armin Zöggeler in Turin in 2006. Since then, one silver medal and no less than nine bronze medals have been added. The latter number could have been even higher, because after Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, there were also three fourth places for South Tyrolean athletes in Pyeongchang 2018 - so nine more bronze medals were narrowly missed. Back then they were also won in biathlon. And just like Johann Passler back then, this time it was Dominik Windisch who first won an individual medal and then a relay medal with his fellow South Tyroleans.

By far the most profitable Winter Games are still those in Lillehammer 1994, when our athletes brought home three gold, one silver and four bronze medals - a total of eight medals. The sober figures for South Tyrol's 2018 Olympics are really a bit meager: 44 athletes from South Tyrol won two bronze medals. Four years ago, 46 South Tyroleans were in Sochi and came back with five medals - one silver, four bronze. Three “golden” Lombard women But the comparison with Italy's 2018 Olympic squad says even more: the 44 South Tyroleans were part of the “Azzurri” squad of 121 athletes - so South Tyrol made up more than a third. However, South Tyrol's share of the haul was more modest, as Italy's haul this time was ten medals - three gold, two silver, five bronze. The Lombard women proved to be particularly strong, as all three gold medals went to three athletes from our neighboring region: Sofia Goggia, Arianna Fontana and Michela Moioli.
