Olympic journey through time – today: February 11th

How nice on February 10th On February 11th there are also two South Troy Olympic victories to be recounted that took place on that day, albeit in two different years.

Josef Polig surprises the ski world The combined competition at the Winter Games in Albertville (France) in 1992 was characterized by many favorites dropping out. The failures were facilitated by a slalom slope that was too difficult and, according to many racers, was poorly prepared. The Austrian Hubert Strolz, for example, was eliminated in the second slalom round - on the way to securing a gold medal.

Finally, there was a double success for the “Azzurri” thanks to Josef Polig and Gianfranco Martin, behind whom the Swiss Steve Locher achieved third place. For Josef Polig from Vipiteno, who had never achieved a podium finish in the World Cup before or since, it was by far the greatest success of his career.

With 6th place in the downhill and 5th in the slalom, Polig won ahead of Gianfranco Martin from Genoa, who also surprisingly reached the podium.

The French Ski Federation protested against Polig and his compatriot for violating the FIS advertising guidelines. The reason: If there was a ban, the fourth-placed Frenchman Jean-Luc Cretier would have moved up to the podium. However, a re-measurement of the logo showed that none of the advertising spaces exceeded the maximum size.

Armin Zöggeler's first Olympic victory The exceptional luger Armin Zöggeler celebrated his first Olympic victory in Salt Lake City on February 11, 2002, 16 years ago. After bronze in 1994 as a 20-year-old in Lillehammer and silver four years later in Nagano, Zöggeler was able to climb onto the highest podium this time - and in the process also take revenge on the great Georg Hackl, who had relegated him to second place four years earlier.

Zöggeler won in 2002 ahead of Bayern Hackl and North Tyrolean Markus Prock. This meant that the three lugers who had set the tone in tobogganing for many years were on the winner's podium.

Georg Hackl celebrated three Olympic victories in a row in 1992, 1994 and 1998. Markus Prock, on the other hand, has won the overall World Cup ten times and two world championship titles.
