Olympic journey through time – today: February 14th

When browsing through the Olympic archives on February 14th you will find a particularly large number of reports about South Tyrolean medals.

This time let's start with the recent past: Five days after Christof Innerhofer won silver in the downhill in Sochi 2014, he won a second medal. In the super combination, Gaiser somewhat surprisingly won bronze behind the Swiss Sandro Viletta and the Croatian Ivica Kostelic. He showed everyone his immense joy by rolling forward onto the podium.

Even two medals from Zöggeler South Tyrol's most successful winter sports athlete Armin Zöggeler even won two medals on February 14th, his first and his penultimate of the six precious metal plaques: As a 20-year-old, he won bronze in Lillehammer in 1994 behind Georg Hackl and Markus Prock, 16 years later he won it in 2010 Bronze again in Vancouver, this time behind Felix Loch and David Möller.

There was also another medal for the tobogganers on February 14th: 1992 in Albertville, Norbert Huber and Hansjörg Raffl won bronze in the doubles behind the two German duos Stefan Krauße/Jan Behrendt and Yves Mankel/Thomas Rudolph.

Two years later, Raffl/Huber improved to silver in Lillehammer. By the way, the 1994 games were something very special for the Huber brothers: four brothers each competed in one race and came in first to fourth place - Wilfried won gold in the doubles tobogganing with Kurt Brugger, ahead of his brother Norbert with Hansjörg Raffl, while Günther secured bronze in the two-man bobsleigh with Stefano Ticci. The only person left without a medal was Arnold, who achieved an ungrateful fourth place in the single-seater toboggan event.

But back to February 14, 1992: Here is a video of Norbert Huber and Hansjörg Raffl winning their first medal.

In addition to the four bronze medals mentioned, there was also a silver medal on February 14th: At the games in Innsbruck in 1976, Gustav Thöni only had to admit defeat to his teammate Piero Gros, while Willi Frommelt from Liechtenstein won bronze.

Already a success story in 1936 Actually there was even a gold medal for a South Tyrolean on February 14th. However, the military patrol run at the 1936 Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was only considered a demonstration competition and not an official Olympic discipline. The victorious Italian team also included a certain Luigi Perenni, who was born Luis Prenn in San Candido and had to change his name during the fascist era.

Luis Prenn, after whom the Luigi Perenni barracks in Courmayeur is named, died in a climbing accident in August 1943.

The military patrol run can be seen as a forerunner of today's biathlon.
