Olympic journey through time – today: February 19th

When looking for top results from South Tyrolean Olympians on February 19th, you don't have to look far back: four years ago, Dorothea Wierer, Karin Oberhofer, Dominik Windisch and Lukas Hofer won the bronze medal in the biathlon mixed relay, which was held for the first time, in Sochi.

The South Tyrolean quartet only needed a total of six spares and crossed the finish line less than a minute behind Norway (with superstars Tora Berger, Tiril Eckhoff, Ole Einar Björndalen and Emil Hegle Svendsen) and 25 seconds behind the Czech Republic. Biathlon great powers such as Russia, Germany and France were defeated.

Wierer, Windisch and Hofer dream of possibly repeating their medal win next Thursday in Pyeongchang, probably with Lisa Vittozzi instead of Karin Oberhofer. Silver two-seater On February 19th, 38 years ago, in 1980, there was also precious metal for South Tyrolean athletes: Peter Gschnitzer and Karl Brunner won silver in the doubles toboggan event in Lake Placid behind the GDR duo Hans Rinn/Norbert Hahn and ahead of the Austrians Georg Fluckinger and Karl Schrott.

Gschnitzer/Brunner won the third medal for South Tyrolean doubles after Siegfried Mair/Walter Fremdsdorfer (bronze 1964) and Paul Hildgartner/Walter Plaikner (gold 1972). Isolde Kostner's second prank Isolde Kostner, who was only 18 at the time, won her second Olympic medal on February 19, 1994 in Lillehammer. Four days after the Super-G, the young woman from Val Gardena also won bronze in the downhill.

At her second award ceremony in Lillehammer, Kostner stood next to winner Katja Seizinger from Germany and the American Picabost.
