SportNews forecast: How many medals will the South Tyroleans win in Pyeongchang?

So far, the Lillehammer Games in 1994 have been the ones with the most South Tyrolean medals, namely eight (3x gold, 1x silver, 4x bronze). SportNews is trying to show why this mark can be exceeded this year.

Will Lillehammer's medal record fall? At the 2018 Olympics, Olympic medals will be distributed over 16 days - according to SportNews forecasts, South Tyrol only has no chance of winning the medal on three days (February 16th, 19th and 25.2th), while in return there will be two days (February 12th and 15.2th). There could even be medals for South Tyrolean athletes in four competitions each. The biggest trump card will be played on February 21st, when Dietmar Nöckler and Federico Pellegrino are likely to miss the podium in the cross-country skiing team sprint due to a fall. 29 competitions with medal chances The “medal guide” through the Olympic program day by day can be found at the end of this text. The next day ( Sunday 11.2. ), South Tyrol has three strong medal contenders in the Olympic downhill: Dominik Paris, Peter Fill and Christof Innerhofer. In addition, the tobogganers have to decide on the men's single-seater - with Dominik Filehner as one of the main actors. And in the men's biathlon sprint, Lukas Hofer and Dominik Windisch are dangerous outsiders.

Am Monday 12.2. South Tyrol's sports fans have to keep their fingers crossed several times, because many would give Manuela Mölgg a medal in the giant slalom, and not just because of her three World Cup podium places this year. The biathletes will compete in both pursuit races, hopefully with good starting positions for Wierer, Hofer and Windisch. And maybe Carolina Kostner can cheer in the figure skating team event.

The Alpine combination often causes surprises at the Olympics, perhaps also on Tuesday 13.2. with Paris, Fill and Innerhofer.

At Valentine's Day, Wednesday November 14.2th , Lukas Hofer and Dominik Windisch and the other biathletes complete the 20 km run with the particularly “expensive” miss (= 1 minute penalty). The tobogganers are the doubles, the carefree, young Manuel Nagler/Ivan Malleier and the experienced Ludwig Rieder/Patrick Rastner.

Am Thursday 15.2. It's going to be really tough with four races with good South Tyrolean medal chances. First Omar Visintin and Emanuel Perathoner compete in snowboard cross, then Dominik Paris, Peter Fill and Christof Innerhofer tackle the super-G. “Doro” Wierer then starts in her best discipline, the 15 km individual competition. And the tobogganers rely on the team relay.

After the first “medal rest day” it goes on Saturday 17.2. further with Johanna Schnarf in the Super-G and once again with Dorothea Wierer, this time in the turbulent mass start.

Am Sunday 18.2. There are again three competitions with South Tyrolean chances of winning a medal, although not very great. First Manni Mölgg tries out giant slalom, then Dietmar Nöckler could be part of Italy's cross-country skiing relay, which traditionally does well at the Olympics. Lukas Hofer and Dominik Windisch are also in the mass start.

After the second “medal rest day” there are a few really big chunks, starting on Tuesday 20.2. in the biathlon mixed relay, which had already won precious metal four years ago.

The next day, on Wednesday November 21.2th , the best chance of winning a medal follows with Dietmar Nöckler (and Federico Pellegrino) in the cross-country freestyle team sprint. On the same day, Johanna Schnarf throws herself down the downhill slope.

You can be excited Thursday 22.2. on the biathlon women's relay with probably 3 South Tyrolean “Azzurre” (Wierer, Sanfilippo, Runggaldier). A few hours earlier, Manfred Mölgg competed in the Olympic men's slalom.

It is a special day Friday 23.2. with the women's figure skating freestyle with Carolina Kostner competing against several teenagers. The combination lottery, however, awaits Johanna Schnarf.

The last two medal chances for South Tyrol's Olympic starters are offered on the penultimate day of the Olympics, Saturday 24.2. : In the parallel giant slalom for snowboarders, you can dream thanks to Edwin Coratti, Roland Fiwickeler and Aaron March (fourth in Sochi). In the biathlon men's relay, including Hofer and Windisch, luck is also needed - as was the case recently in the World Cup.

On the last day of competition, Sunday 25.2. , nothing will be added to what will hopefully already be a lavish collection of medals by then.
