South Tyrolean Olympic participants honored, Paralympians farewell

Two big medals in biathlon and in the biathlon mixed relay and four medal holders: This is South Tyrol's haul from the 2018 Winter Olympics. South Tyrol's athletes could win further medals at the upcoming Paralympics in Peyongchang. The state government has used these two events as an opportunity to honor the athletes returning from South Korea and everyone who is heading to Peyongchang. Many of the 44 South Tyrolean Olympic participants and many Paralympians accepted the invitation from Governor Arno Kompatscher and Sports Councilor Martha Stocker.

The two-time medal winner Dominik Windisch and Lukas Hofer, a member of the successful mixed relay, met in the Laimburg rock cellar on Tuesday evening. There were also athletes who narrowly missed out on a medal, such as the tobogganer Dominik Fischnelller and the skiers Manuela Moelgg, Dominik Paris and Riccardo Tonetti. “You are partly to blame for my more pronounced dark circles under my eyes,” said Governor Kompatscher last night, “like many South Tyroleans, I was excited at night and it paid off.” He is proud of South Tyrol's athletes, even taking part in the Winter Olympics was one Award and apart from the medals, South Tyrol's Olympians stood out through their commitment and performance.

The fact that a country as small as South Tyrol was sending 44 athletes to the Winter Games was also highlighted yesterday by State Sports Councilor Stocker: “This is also thanks to our sports clubs, whose basic work lays the foundation for sporting careers.” The Olympic Games are for everyone Athletes and every female athlete are one of the highest goals, said the state councilor.

Last night, the South Tyrolean participants in the 2018 Winter Paralympics, which will take place from March 9th to 18th in Pyeongchangl, were also bid farewell, including several members of the sledge hockey team. State Governor Kompatscher and State Councilor Stocker wished the athletes much success.
