On penalties: Canada's women win gold against Sweden

The women's national soccer team from Canada won the gold medal at the Olympic Games for the first time and succeeded the record winner USA. In the final, which was moved from Tokyo to Yokohama, the Canadians won 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout on Friday. After 120 minutes the score was previously 1-1. Stina Blackstenius (34th minute) had put Sweden in the lead, substitute Janine Beckie (67th) forced extra time with her goal from a penalty kick. The Swedes already looked like winners in the penalty shootout with a 2-1 lead, but Canada equalized again after five shooters. Julia Grosso converted the decisive penalty after goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe had previously saved. Canada won bronze in both 2012 and 2016. The day before, bronze went to the US team led by top star Megan Rapinoe with a 4:3 (3:1) win in the game for third place against Australia. After their last four gold medals (1996, 2004, 2008, 2012) and two World Championship titles in a row, the Americans were actually considered gold favorites in Tokyo. Canada beat the USA in the semifinals. The German Rio Olympic champions did not qualify for the games in Japan. The final was originally scheduled for 11.00 a.m. local time at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium. But because of the expected midday heat, both teams had requested that the game be postponed to the evening. However, since the athletics competitions were taking place in the National Stadium at that time, the game was rescheduled for 21.00 p.m. at the International Stadium in Yokohama.
