Karate and track cycling: Italy in the medal rush

In the early hours of the morning in Tokyo Gregorio Paltrinieri on the bronze medal in the 10-kilometer swim, a little later the canoeist Manfredi Rizza took silver before the Walker Massimo Stano sensationally won the golden one won the 20-kilometer competition – and now there are two more precious metals to be noted.

Professional cyclist and standard bearer Elia Viviani took the bronze medal in the omnium, as did karateka Viviana Bottaro. These were medal numbers 34 and 35 for Italy at these Olympic Games - that's an impressive result. Viviani with a strong comeback In 2016, Elia Viviani was crowned Olympic champion in the omnium in Rio, and now he also won a bronze medal in Tokyo. In this track cycling all-around competition, athletes have to compete against each other in four different endurance disciplines.

Viviani started the race modestly and was only in 11th position after the first two disciplines (scratch and tempo race). Then he came up trumps in the elimination race – his favorite discipline – winning it and also cut a good figure in the final points race, which is why it was enough for bronze. Gold went to Britain's Matthew Walls, while Campbell Stewart from New Zealand took silver.

Karate medals will also be awarded for the first time this year. And here Italy promptly won a medal: 33-year-old Bottaro won bronze in the “Kata” discipline. Gold went to Sandra Sanchez Jaime (Spain), silver went to Kiyou Shimizu from Japan.
