New Olympic Oath in Tokyo

At the opening ceremony on July 23rd, not three participants will speak the greeting, but six. As the International Olympic Committee announced on Wednesday, there will be one female athlete, one female athlete, one male trainer, one female referee and one female referee. This is just one of many measures taken by the IOC and the organizing committee to promote women in sport at all levels and in all areas, the IOC statement said. The words to be pronounced are also adjusted. In the future it will initially be “In the name of all competitors…”, “In the name of all the judges…” or “In the name of all the coaches and officials…”. The words “We vow to take part in these Olympic Games while respecting the rules…” are then supplemented by the terms fair play, inclusion and equality. “We stand together in solidarity and are committed to a sport without doping, without cheating and without any form of discrimination,” it continues. “We Olympians are role models and ambassadors,” said the chairwoman of the IOC Athletes Commission, Kirsty Coventry, and spoke of a “strong message” sent by the new Olympic oath. The idea of the oath goes back to Baron Pierre de Coubertin. It was first spoken at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp by the Belgian fencer Victor Boin. In 1961, the IOC converted the oath into a promise.
