Then the 1500 m Olympic champion in Rio fell ill with Pfeiffer's glandular fever - this is bad news for an athlete. Even participation in the Games in Tokyo was in jeopardy. But in the end, the 26-year-old got himself in shape for the journey to the kingdom of the rising sun - and is now causing a huge sensation there.

After being sensational a week ago won the silver medal in the 800 m , he added on Thursday night (CEST): In the marathon competition over 10 kilometers, the swimming star clinched the bronze medal. The Italian completes his set of medals at the Olympics: gold in Rio over 1500 m, silver in Tokyo over 800 m and now bronze over 10 kilometers. Wellbrock in a league of its own “Greg” swam in the 29 degree warm water in Tokyo Bay right from the start, even though he was initially in 5th place. The longer the competition lasted, the further the four-time world champion worked his way forward. Until shortly before the end he was even in second place, behind the outstanding German Florian Wellbrock. But at the finish, Paltrinieri was overtaken by Hungarian Kristof Rasovszky. Still: This bronze medal feels like a victory.

After the competition, Paltrinieri paid tribute to the new Olympic champion Wellbrock. “Florian was on another planet today,” said the Italian. Wellbrock immediately put pressure on in his first Olympic open water race and quickly gained a lead over the field, which he didn't relinquish until the end. After bronze in the 1500 m, the swimmer from Bremen now won his first gold medal at the Games. Rizza takes silver On Thursday night there was another medal for Italy. The canoeist Manfredi Rizza came in second in the 200 m canoe sprint. Briton Liam Heat took gold.
