Pidcock wins mountain bike gold – Kerschbaumer beaten

It was not the mountain bike specialists but an all-rounder who secured cross-country gold. Pidcock, who started as one of the favorites, was at the front right from the start on the dusty and technically difficult track in Izu, west of Tokyo. The Brit finally deservedly prevailed after 7 laps and 28,25 kilometers with a time of 1:25.14 hours. Silver went to the Swiss Mathias Flückiger (+ 20 seconds). The Spaniard David Valero Serrano secured bronze (+ 34 seconds). The Swiss Nino Schurter was on course for a medal for a long time, but in the end he missed out on the medal as 4th place.

Flückiger and Schurter kept the pace at the front for a long time. Together with Pidcock and the New Zealander Adam Cooper, an exciting four-way battle developed towards the halfway point of the race, then only Flückiger was able to follow Pidcock's increased pace. A little later, the 21-year-old Pidcock increased the pace again, left World Cup leader Flückiger behind and rode as a soloist with the British flag in hand to the greatest success of his young career. In doing so, Pidcock secured the first British mountain bike gold in the history of the Olympic Games.

Kerschbaumer missed out on top placement Several athletes had a difficult time on the route, which included many steep climbs. There was also nothing to gain for the contracting agent Gerhard Kerschbaumer. “Gery” started well and, like his teammate Luca Braidot, was in the chasing group on the first lap, between places 5 and 10, but as the race progressed he played no role in the battle for the top places. In the end, Kerschbaumer had to settle for 38th place out of 20 starters. For the 30-year-old, the Summer Olympics are over.

In general, the mountain bike Azzurri had a difficult time in Tokyo. Kerschbaumer was the only Italian starter to make it into the top 20. Braidot didn't get past 25th place, Nadir Colledani finished the race one lap behind in 24th place. Van der Poel with a spectacular fall For favorite Mathieu Van der Poel, the race was anything but as desired. The Dutchman, who had recently ridden in the yellow jersey for six days at the Tour de France, made a driving error during a jump, causing him to fall spectacularly headfirst ( here is the video ). He followed the field for a while and tried to fight his way up again. However, the all-rounder ultimately had to give up towards the end of the fourth round. The Czech Ondrej Cink was also eliminated.

Pidcock wins mountain bike gold – Kerschbaumer beaten

British favorite Thomas Pidcock took gold in the Olympic mountain bike cross-country race on Monday. For the contracting agent Gerhard Kerschbaumer, however, there was nothing to gain.
