World champion Gardiner wins 400 meters

The 25-year-old from the Bahamas won on Thursday in 43,85 seconds. Colombia's Anthony José Zambrano won silver in 44,08 seconds ahead of Kirani James from Grenada (44,19), who completed his set of medals after gold in 2012 and silver in 2016.

The highly rated US duo came away empty-handed: Michael Cherry came fourth, Michael Norman fifth. The Americans dominated the distance over a stadium lap at the Summer Games from 1984 to 2008 before James won in 2012 and the South African Wayde van Niekerk in 2016 with the world record of 43,03 seconds, which is still valid today.

The American Katie Nageotte had already become Olympic pole vault champion for the first time. The favored 30-year-old US champion won on Thursday with 4,90 meters. World champion Anzhelika Sidorova - the Russian starts under a neutral flag - took silver with five centimeters less ahead of the same height from Great Britain Holly Bradshaw. Rio Olympic champion Ekaterini Stefanidi from Greece missed the medal in fourth place with 4,80 meters. Warner and Thiam cheer Canadian Damian Warner is an Olympic decathlon champion. The 31-year-old athlete won the gold medal with an Olympic record of 9018 points. World record holder Kevin Mayer from France landed in second place (1500) after the final 8726 meter run, as he did five years ago in Rio de Janeiro. Australian Ashley Moloney (8649) won bronze after two days of competition. The American Ashton Eaton won gold in London in 2012 and in Rio in 2016.

As in 2016, the women's heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium was crowned Olympic champion with 6791 points. The Dutchwoman Anouk Vetter won silver with 6689 points ahead of her compatriot Emma Oosterwegel (6590).

World champion Gardiner wins 400 meters

After his title at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Steven Gardiner also won Olympic gold in the 400 meters in Tokyo.
