“I’m ashamed to return home”

The news hit like a bomb early Monday evening: Alex Schwazer tested positive for EPO in a doping test on July 30th and was immediately excluded from the Olympic Games. According to the 27-year-old from Kalch, this was the first and only time that he resorted to prohibited substances: “I swear that I was clean in Beijing and at all other competitions. I felt very good physically in the last few weeks, but I wanted to get even more out of it in view of the two Olympic competitions." Schwazer takes full responsibility for his actions: "I ordered the doping myself on the Internet and during my stay in Oberstdorf, mid-July, also sprayed it myself. When a urine sample was taken on July 30th, my world collapsed. Since then I haven't been able to sleep because I knew that I would be convicted of doping." For this reason, Schwazer also canceled the 20 km competition on August 4th from its program. His cold was therefore only faked. “With this looming Sword of Damocles hanging over me, I simply couldn’t travel to London. My career is over, my life is over. “I’m ashamed to return home to my parents,” said the South Tyrolean walker in an interview with “Gazzetta”. Alex Schwazer couldn't have chosen a sadder departure from the international athletics stage.
