London 2012: No medal for South Tyrol

TANIA CAGNOTTO The Bolzano diver Tania Cagnotto narrowly missed out on a medal at her fourth Olympic Games. She was the unlucky one at these games because she had to settle for fourth place in both the synchronized jumping with Francesca Dallapè and the individual jumping from the 3-meter board. In synchronized jumping, 2,7 points were missing from bronze, and in individual jumping, only 0,2 points were missing. It's a shame, because Cagnotto showed a very strong performance in these games. The way she handled these two fourth places was also world class. She deserves gold for that. ANDREAS SEPPI The Kalterer tennis player Andreas Seppi can also be satisfied with his performance in London, or rather in Wimbledon. In the individual, as in Beijing, he was eliminated in the second round against eventual bronze medalist Juan Martin Del Porto. He had previously defeated the American Donald Young. Seppi was unlucky in the doubles and mixed doubles draw. With Daniele Bracciali he lost to the Czechs Radek Stepanek/Tomasz Berdych, while with Sara Errani he was eliminated against the Wimbledon winners Lisa Raymond and Mike Bryan. PETRA ZUBLASING The Eppan sports shooter Petra Zublasing came 12th in both the 10-meter air rifle shooting and the small-caliber three-position competition. In both competitions she narrowly missed making it to the final of the top eight. A very good result at the age of 23. Zublasing gained important experience in London. Her boyfriend, Nicolò Campriani, became an Olympic champion and that is another reason why she will probably not forget these games in a hurry. SILVIA WEISSTEINER After Schwazer was excluded, Silvia Weissteiner from Gasteig was the only South Tyrolean representative in the supreme discipline of athletics. After a difficult year, the 33-year-old managed to qualify for the Olympics and almost reached the final of the top 15 in the 5000 m. In the end she was only 43 hundredths short. She was also ill before the race, so she can be very happy with her performance. In 15:06.81 minutes she ran the second best time of her career. EVA LECHNER The Eppan mountain biker Eva Lechner probably expected more from these games. Unfortunately, a fall at the World Cup final in Val D'Isere, just two weeks before the Olympics, set her back. In the race, Lechner only kept up in the first lap, then she lost touch with the leaders and finally crossed the finish line in 6.44th place, 17 minutes behind winner Bresset. Lechner is 27 years old, so he could perhaps still compete in Rio 2016. She will have her first chance for revenge in two weeks at the World Cup in Austria. GERHARD KERSCHBAUMER The 21-year-old Gerhard Kerschbaumer from Verdings, on the other hand, celebrated his debut at the Olympic Games in London. With success, because he took an excellent 13th place in the mountain bike race. After a bad start to the season, Kerschbaumer had found his old form again in the last few weeks and was able to meet expectations. The future belongs to him in this discipline. LAURA LETRARI The Brixen swimmer Laura Letrari was the last South Tyrolean to qualify for London. That was a huge success for the 23-year-old. With the 4 x 100 m freestyle relay, in which Federica Pellegrini also swam, she clearly missed the final of the top eight and came 12th. Letrari was used as the third relay swimmer (55,74 seconds).
