Payday: This is how much the South Tyrolean medal winners collect

Diver Tania Cagnotto sweetened the end of her career with Silver in synchronized jumping and Bronze in the individual jumping from the 3 m board, while volleyball player Simone Giannelli with the Italian national team Silver fetched. Now the two people from Bolzano can look forward not only to Olympic precious metal, but also to a big boost to their own bank account.

Cagnotto wins The Italian Olympic Committee pays out 150.000 euros for a gold medal, 75.000 euros for a silver medal and 50.000 euros for a bronze medal. Applied to the South Tyrolean athletes, this means the following: Cagnotto receives a whopping 125.000 euros as a reward, while Giannellium has become an impressive 75.000 euros richer. Nevertheless, these figures should be viewed with caution, as the amounts are considered income by the Italian tax authorities and are therefore taxed at around 40%. The diver is therefore left with around 75.000 euros net, while Giannelli receives around 45.000 euros.

Azerbaijan pays record sum In contrast to other major sporting nations, Italy is very generous when it comes to distributing Olympic bonuses. German Olympic champions receive comparatively little at 20.000 euros, as do the USA (22.500 euros), China (28.000 euros), France (50.000 euros) and Russia (54.000 euros). The leader of this special ranking is Azerbaijan, which pays Radik Isaev, himself a Taekwondo Olympic champion, a fabulous bonus of 450.000 euros. Indonesia's gold athletes will also receive the proud sum of 345.000 euros.

Olympic mascot as a gold reward But there is another way: For a gold medal, Iran will give out not only gold bars worth 120.000 euros, but also a Chinese sports car and a piece of land in the athlete's hometown. Olympic champions from South Korea and Hungary can enjoy a lifelong pension. The two Swedish gold medal winners, Sara Sjöström (swimming, 100 meter butterfly) and Jenny Rissveds (mountain bike cross-country), will receive a large Olympic mascot as a reward. Great Britain, on the other hand, does not give its athletes any bonus at all.
