Dominik Windisch surprises in the sprint - gold for “Oldie” Björndalen

Ole Einar Björndalen won the first biathlon gold at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. The veteran from Norway prevailed in the sprint and celebrated the seventh Olympic victory of his career. Although he made a mistake at the shooting range, he recorded the absolute best time of 24:33,5 minutes. With twelve medals, Björndalen also equaled the Olympic record of his compatriot and cross-country skier Björn Dählie.

The Austrian Dominik Landertinger also surprisingly secured silver in the floodlit race. He crossed the finish line without any shooting errors, 1,3 seconds behind. Bronze went to Czech Jaroslav Soukup (+5,7).

Dominik Windisch comes up trumps

Dominik Windisch is the big surprise in the Italian team. The 24-year-old from Rasen recently stayed away from the World Cup for weeks due to a persistent cold. For a long time there was a lot of mystery surrounding his health. He finished this on Saturday afternoon with an impressive performance in the sprint. After Windisch fell far behind after his mistake in the first shooting, he constantly fought his way back forward and made up position after position. After not once missing the mark in the standing stage, he started the final sprint and ultimately finished the race 34,1 seconds behind.

Hofer was top until half time

Lukas Hofer was bursting with energy from the start and immediately set a high pace. After the first of three laps, he had the third best time. He then showed a brilliant performance in prone shooting. He went into the second round without any mistakes. As a result, he made a shooting error while standing and had to take a penalty lap. The medals were therefore out of reach for him. On the last lap, the Montaler continued to lose time and fell directly behind Dominik Windisch in the rankings.

His brother Markus was unable to set any accents at the start of the biathlon races. After two shooting errors (1+1) and a cautious performance on the cross-country ski trail, he finished the race in 81st place. The fourth “Azzurro”, Christian De Lorenzi, finished 47th.

40-year-old Ole Einar Björndalen caused a big sensation at the biathlon center in Krasnaya Polyana: He secured the gold medal in the sprint. The South Tyroleans Dominik Windisch and Lukas Hofer missed the top ten.
