Done! Carolina Kostner wins her longed-for first Olympic medal

The 2012 world champion, five-time European champion and seven-time Italian champion finally has her first Olympic medal. After Christof Innerhofer (2), Armin Zöggeler and the Biathon Mixed Relay, she secured the fifth South Tyrolean precious metal in the Caucasus, the eighth overall for the Italian delegation.

Kostner enchants the audience

The spectators in the “Iceberg Skating Palace” were treated to almost perfection by Carolina Kostner. With start number 20, she went onto the ice immediately after the exceptional talent and crowd favorite Yulia Lipnitskaya, who had given her a great performance. But she found her way straight away to the familiar sounds of “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel. She started with a flawless triple Lutz, then followed a combination of double Axel with triple Teoloop, which worked like a charm, as did the triple flip. The filigree native of Val Gardena conjured up a flawless appearance on the ice. This was greeted with thunderous applause from the audience.

Personal record broken

After setting the points record in the short program, Kostner set another record with her 142,61 points in the free skate. In total this resulted in 216,73 points, the third place in the European Championships has never scored so many in her career.

Sotnikova takes gold

Kostner had thus set very clear standards that the following competition would have to struggle against. Only Yuna Kim and Adelina Sotnikova, who were already just ahead of Kostner after the short program, managed to top the South Tyrolean's score. Adelina Sotnikova also showed a flawless performance, but was a bit more elegant. With the help of the audience's favor, the jury awarded her 224,59 points. Meanwhile, Yuna Kim from South Korea, who was also a strong half-time leader, took second place with 219,11 points. The gold medal for the Russian local hero was perfect.

In addition to Kostner, another Italian took part in the women's free skate. Valentina Marchei from Lombardy took eleventh place with 173,33 points.
