1 more day to Sochi: South Tyrol’s “Alpine”

South Tyrol has been waiting for an Olympic medal in alpine skiing since Salt Lake City 2002. The last time Isolde Kostner (second in the downhill) and Karen Putzer (third in the Super-G) brought Edelmatall home. Fill, Innerhofer and Co. want to end this dry spell in Sochi.

The men's number: Peter Fill: The Castelrotto native impressed with his excellent form at the start of the season. In Beaver Creek he made it onto the podium in third place in both the downhill and super-G. These were the first podium placements since January 2009. In his only appearances in Sochi so far, the new father took 2012st place in the downhill and tenth place in the super combined in the winter of 21.

Werner Heel: If anyone has a score to settle with the Olympic Games, it is Werner Heel. The veteran from the Passeier Valley. Four years ago he was only two hundredths short of an Olympic medal. At that time he finished an ungrateful fourth place in Vancouver. Unlike in Canada, Heel is not one of the favorites this time, but he could be an insider tip if he can match the performances from the season so far.

Christof Innerhofer: Is the ski world in Sochi experiencing the rebirth of the Winnerhofer? The speed specialist from Gais, who showed his skills with his fifth place in the first training session, would be capable of doing so. There will probably not be such a big success in Sochi as at the 2011 World Cup in Garmisch, when he won a complete set of medals, but the competition should have him on their list.

Manfred Mölgg: The Gadertaler is the great hope of the Italian team in the technical disciplines. The experience of around 200 World Cup races and a level of consistency that is rarely found in the international ski circuit speak for him. Why shouldn't he repeat Schladming's feat when he finished third in the World Cup giant slalom?

Dominic Paris: In the past, the 24-year-old from Ultimo impressed primarily with his carefree attitude, with which he drove the competition into the ground, for example in Kitzbühel or Bormio. Paris has now established himself among the top athletes and at the same time raised his hopes of an Olympic medal, even though he was recently handicapped for a long time due to a fall in training in Val Gardena.

Patrick Thaler: The “oldie” in the green-white-red squad is also one of the high-flyers of the past few months. Many had written off Thaler years ago, but suddenly he is one of the hottest irons in the fire. The reason for this is the 35-year-old's World Cup placements this winter: two third places, a fifth, two sixth and an eleventh place speak for him.

The women: Denise Carbon: The Castelrotto native has been repeatedly set back by injuries in the recent past, which is why she is traveling to Sochi this season without much success. However, with her experience she can also achieve a top result in Sochi. This is Karbon's fourth Olympic participation: in 2002 in Park City she came 14th in the giant slalom, four years later in Turin she was eliminated early, while in Vancouver she finished 23rd (RTL) and 18th (slalom).

Verena Stuffer: The 29-year-old from Val Gardena got into the form of her life just before the Olympics. On January 23rd, she recorded her best World Cup placing in eighth place at the Super-G in Cortina. Just three days later, she beat this again and even took fourth place in another Super-G in the Belluno winter sports resort. This meant that she could no longer take part in the Olympics. Who knows, maybe Stuffer will make it onto the podium for the first time in Sochi of all places...

The Olympic slope:

The "Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort" is located in Aibga Ridge, near Krasnaya Polyana. All “Alpine” competitors will be held there, i.e. downhill, super combined, super-G, giant slalom and slalom. The total length of the slope is 20 kilometers. They were designed by Beranrd Russi.
