A total of ten South Tyrolean luge athletes are taking part in the Winter Games in Sochi. The outstanding athlete is Armin Zöggeler, who could make history. If the 40-year-old from Völlan wins a medal, he would be the first athlete to win a medal at six consecutive Winter Olympics. But his teammates could also have a say in the awarding of precious metals.

Men

Armin Zöggeler: You don't really need to introduce him anymore. Zöggeler is a living legend in tobogganing and the most successful Olympian in Italy. Although the Völlaner turned 40 in January, he was able to achieve some very strong results in the World Cup this year. He took second place in the overall ranking and at the last World Cup competition of the season in Sigulda he was crowned European champion for the third time in his career. His success story began at the Olympic Games in Lillehammer in 1994 with bronze. Four years later, Armin Zöggeler won the silver medal before becoming Olympic champion for the first time in Salt Lake City in 2002. He also defended his title four years later at the home games in Turin. Four years ago in Vancouver, Zöggeler reached the Olympic podium for the fifth time in his career, this time taking bronze.

Dominik Filehner: In the shadow of Armin Zöggeler, Dominik Filehner has matured into a top athlete. The 20-year-old from Merans celebrated his first World Cup victory in Lillehammer. He also took third place three times, including at the European Championships in Sigulda. This result in the last World Cup race in particular should give Fiwickeler a lot of encouragement, as he will be taking part in the Winter Olympics for the first time.

Emanuel Rieder: Like Filehner, he is also 20 years old and wants one thing above all in Sochi: to gain experience. In Winterberg, Rieder achieved his best World Cup result to date, namely an eighth place. A top ten result would already be a strong result for the young South Tyrolean luger.

Women

Sandra Gasparini: The 23-year-old from Vipiteno is certainly the most promising candidate in the Italian team. She will most likely compete in the team competition. There, together with a men's single-seater and the double-seater, they certainly have a chance of winning precious metal - at least in the World Cup, the South Tyrolean quartet has already been on the podium several times.

Andrea Vötter: The 18-year-old from Völs is traveling to Sochi with a lot of self-confidence. She won the junior world championship title in Igls on Friday. At the last World Cup competition in Sigulda, Vötter came 20th. That was also her best individual result in the highest racing series for artificial track luge.

Sandra Robatscher: Sandra Robatscher is also still very young, 18 years old. She was also able to put herself in the spotlight at the Junior World Championships in Igls. The animal sergeant took second place behind Andrea Vötter and won silver. Igls seems to suit Robatscher at all, because she also celebrated her best World Cup result to date in the North Tyrolean ice channel - 12th place. That was in November 2012. In the current season she came 17th in Lillehammer.

Oberstolz/Gruber: They are guaranteed fourth place - as was the case at the last edition of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where they missed the podium by a few hundredths of a second. Now, in the fourth participation in the Games with the Five Rings, the goal is to win gold, silver or bronze for the first time. The Oberstolz/Gruber duo is in form, as the European Championship title in Sigulda proves. In the World Cup, the two South Tyroleans were on the podium 56 times in their careers, 16 of which were the highest.

Rieder/Rastner: They are the duo of the future: Ludwig Rieder (22 years old) and Patrick Rastner (20). The two youngsters are taking part in the Olympic Games for the first time in Sochi and are making their debut. But despite their small wealth of experience, the two should not be underestimated. This year they were even on the podium in the World Cup, namely in Winterberg, where they took third place. Rieder/Rastner took fifth place in the overall World Cup ranking.

The attachment

The center for artificial track tobogganers is called “Sanki” and was built in the Alpika Service Mountain Ski Resort. The destination is located in Rzhanaya Polyana. The state-of-the-art technology installed in the ice channel allows the ice temperature to be perfectly controlled throughout the facility. 5000 spectators can watch the competitions on site.
