8 days left until Sochi: South Tyrol's snowboarders

A total of seven South Tyroleans represent Italy at the Olympic snowboard races. Five of them start in the parallel competitions, two in boardercross. It's a colorful group of young talents and experienced riders who are definitely aiming for a podium finish.

Alpine snowboard:

Roland Fischller: Up to this point, South Tyrol's best snowboarder had probably imagined the Olympic season to be completely different. After being at the forefront of the World Cup in recent years, Fiwickeler hasn't really found his way this winter. Nevertheless, he remains a very hot iron in the fire, especially since he has always been a force to be reckoned with at major events. The fact that the 33-year-old veteran is the only Italian Olympic participant who is traveling to Sochi as a current two-time World Cup medalist is evidence of this.

Aaron March: The 27-year-old from Vipiteno has been an integral part of the Snowboard World Cup for five years now. He was able to establish himself among the absolute best in the world, especially in slalom. He has already been on the podium nine times in this discipline. March is also the only South Tyrolean who made it into the top three in the parallel competitions this season. Third place in Bad Gastein should make him confident that things will go better in Sochi than four years ago in Vancouver, when he finished 3th.

Nadya Ochner: The Etschtal native is the only woman and, at 20, the youngest athlete in the South Tyrolean snowboard squad. Ochner provided some bright spots in what had been a gloomy season to date. She made it to the final three times in the slalom and narrowly missed the podium in fourth place at the Karerpass. Of all things, she showed her class at the home race. If she can access this in Sochi, she can definitely make it to the front of the field. Meinhard Erlacher: For the 31-year-old Enneberger, this is the third Olympic participation after Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010. In the previous two editions he achieved a 22nd and a 21st place. His goal must be to better this performance and add another highlight to his career. His greatest successes so far are two third places in the World Cup (2005 in Sungwoo and 2009 in Kreischberg).

Christopher Mick: Meanwhile, the Welschnofen native recorded his best World Cup result so far this season: the 25-year-old took sixth place on his home track on the Karerpass. He finally managed to use his training performance in competition and thus qualified for the Olympics. For Mick, like Ochner, it is the first time taking part in the major winter sports event.

Boardercross:

Omar Visintin: There seem to be no limits to the 24-year-old Algunder's success this winter. After he had already worked his way up to third place in the overall World Cup in the previous season, he has stepped up his game again in recent months and has moved to the top of the international boardercross circus. With first and third place in Andorra, as well as second place in Montafon, he took the lead in the overall World Cup and thus catapulted himself among the highly talked about medal candidates in Sochi.

Emanuel Perathoner: In the shadow of Visintin, Perathoner also consistently picked up World Cup points this season. In Andorra he came fifth. He was only better in 2013 in Arosa and the year before in Veysonnaz. He travels to Russia without any pressure, but he certainly has what it takes to pull off a big surprise.

The competition venue:

The snowboarding competitions at the Sochi Olympics will be held east of Rosa Khutor, in the so-called Extreme Park. There is space for up to 6.500 spectators, who can commute between the different slopes and courses within a small radius.
