Silvia Bertagna in the final

This Tuesday, the slopestyle competition for freeskiers is celebrating its Olympic premiere. The qualifying runs started early in the morning (CET). Also at the start was South Tyrolean Silvia Bertagna, who was the first Italian freestyle athlete to make it onto the podium at the World Cup in Gstaad almost a month ago. At that time she also got a ticket for the Olympic Games in Sochi.

In twelfth place, the 27-year-old from Ortisei just managed to qualify for the final round of the best 12. In the first of two runs (the better one is counted), Bertagna laid the foundation for reaching the final. The woman from Val Gardena achieved the ninth best score (70,60).

In the second run, the local freeskier wanted to do even better. However, she fell, which is why her points from the first round were counted in the final qualifying standings. This meant she finished 12th. Since there were still a few athletes at the start, a long period of waiting and hoping began for Bertagna. In the end, however, it was enough. Canadian Dara Howell scored the highest score.

In the final round, which begins at 10 a.m., Bertagna will face the three Canadians Dara Howell, Kim Lamarre and Yuki Tsubota, the British Katie Summerhayes, the Americans Devin Logan, Julia Krass and Keri Herman, the Swede Emma Dahlstrom, the Australian Anna Segal, as well as the two Swiss women Eveline Bhend and Camillia Berra.
