Sochi 2014 is history

It was a very atmospheric Winter Games that took place without incident. From a South Tyrolean perspective, the Russian mega sporting event was very successful, as the local winter athletes returned from the Caucasus with a total of five medals.

Ski racer Christoph Innerhofer won silver in the downhill and combined for bronze. The Gaiser was only one of four South Tyroleans to win precious metal twice at the same games. The other three successful Olympians are Gustav Thöni (Alpine skiing/1972 Sapporo), Johann Passler (Biathlon/1988 Calgary) and Isolde Kostner (Alpine skiing/1994 Lillehammer).

Artificial track sledder Armin Zöggeler wrote winter sports history with his sixth Olympic medal (bronze), as he is the only athlete to always win a medal in the same discipline at six consecutive Games. In six individual starts he was on the podium six times.

Figure skater Carolina Kostner put the icing on her unique career with the bronze medal, which, after a world championship title and five victories at European Championships, was only missing an Olympic medal.

The biathlon mixed relay team Dorothea Wierer , Karin Oberhofer , Lukas hofer and Dominik Windisch finally got the bronze medal they deserved after all four had a taste of the podium in the individual competitions and narrowly missed it.

But the other South Tyrolean athletes were also able to impress almost without exception with some exceptional performances and gained a lot of sympathy from local sports fans. Goodbye to the Olympic Winter Games until 2018, goodbye to Pyeongchang...

The 22nd Olympic Winter Games in Sochi came to an end on Sunday evening with an atmospheric closing ceremony.
