South Tyrolean mixed relay team wins bronze!

What a performance by the Italian biathlon relay team! After the twelfth day of the Olympics began with disappointments in snowboarding, cross-country skiing and alpine skiing, the ski hunters still provided an absolute highlight from a South Tyrolean perspective.

Dorothea Wierer went to the cross-country ski trail first. She stood up to the heavily talked about medal favorites right from the start and established herself in the front of the field. She shot clean in the first shooting, but missed once in the second. Nevertheless, she handed over to Karin Oberhofer in third place. This confirmed her outstanding Olympic form with another strong performance. With just one penalty in the standing stage, she secured third place.

Afterwards it was Dominik Windisch’s turn. Although he shone with good running performance, he had to reload a total of four times at the shooting range. However, the direct rivals for third place, the athletes from Germany, Russia and France, fared no differently and so it was up to final runner Lukas Hofer to save third place to the finish. After his mixed performances in the individual competitions, the Montaler came up trumps: After hitting all the targets at the shooting range at an uncanny pace, he left nothing to burn on the cross-country ski trail and clearly kept the German Simon Schempp at a distance. Hofer crossed the finish line 58,2 behind the leader. The medal win was a wrap!

Biathlon dry spell ended

This is the first medal for Italy's biathletes at the Winter Olympics since 1998 in Nagano, when Pieralberto Carrara won silver in the individual race. For South Tyrol, however, it is the first medal since the two “bronzes” in Calgary in 1988. At that time, Johann Passler was successful in the 20 km individual race as were Werner Kiem, Gottlieb Taschler, Passler and the current selection coach Andreas Zingerle in the relay.

Historic gold for Björndalen

Only the biathletes from Norway and the Czech Republic were better than the “Azzurri” on Wednesday. The biggest hustle and bustle in the finish area was around Ole Einar Björndalen, who became the most successful Olympic participant of all time with the gold medal in the mixed relay. The 40-year-old won his eighth gold medal and, with an additional four silvers and one bronze, surpassed his previously leading compatriot Björn Dählie in the all-time best list.

Norway's quartet with Tora Berger, Tiril Eckhoff, Björndalen and mass start Olympic champion Emil Hegle Svendsen (2 spares) won the Olympic premiere of this competition with a lead of 32,6 seconds over the Czech Republic (7).
