Svendsen wins mass start – South Tyrolean beaten off

After two postponements due to fog, the men's mass start competition, initially scheduled for Sunday, was able to take place on Tuesday. But the conditions were extremely adverse, as it was snowing heavily at the Laura Cross Country Ski & Biathlon Center, which made it anything but easy for the 30 best biathletes in the world.

After the starting signal, the field stayed together with a few exceptions. The two South Tyroleans Lukas Hofer (Montal) and Dominik Windisch (Rasen) were also just behind the top group and reached the shooting range with the fastest biathletes after the first round. But after the first test, at least Hofer had to bury his medal dreams because he missed twice. Windisch made another mistake in the second shooting test and said goodbye to the race for the medals.

Svendsen strong at the shooting range

The top people made no mistakes, or only one. Emil Hegle Svendsen (Norway) hit all 20 targets and ultimately came out on top with a winning time of 42.29,1 minutes. Second place went to the Frenchman Martin Fourcade, who was one ski tip slower than the Scandinavian, but who had the same time as the World Cup leader. Fourcade made a mistake in the first shooting, but fought back thanks to a strong performance on skis.

While Svendsen won the fourth Olympic medal of his career (the third in an individual competition), for Fourcade it was the third medal in Sochi after gold in the pursuit and individual, and also the fourth medal of his career.

Björndalen gambles away

Bronze went to Ondrej Moravec (Czech Republic), who lost 13,8 seconds to Svendsen and Fourcade in the last one and a half kilometers. For the 29-year-old Czech, it was the second precious metal of the games in Sochi, after silver in the pursuit.

Ole Einar Björndalen gambled big in the fight for the medals at the last shooting and scored four tickets. That probably cost him third place. In the end, the Olympic sprint champion came 22nd.

Windisch took 25th place after a total of five errors, while Lukas Hofer had to give up after the third shooting and therefore did not reach the finish.
