However, the extreme sports event on the Horseshoe Tour in the Sarntal Alps will take place in a somewhat scaled-down form this year. As an exception, participants can “only” choose from the two short variants, the South Tyrol Sky Marathon (44,5 km/2863 meters in altitude) and the South Tyrol Sky Trail (27 km/1800 meters in altitude). Georg Piazza, the winner of the Maddalene 30K, is also at the start of the marathon distance, which the man from Val Gardena won last weekend.

After intensive weeks and months of preparation, the organizers of the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace are on the home stretch. “We are ready for our event. Of course it was difficult because we were faced with many more requirements as a result of the corona pandemic. Many of these restrictions have certainly led to athletes – especially from abroad – deciding not to take part. But all organizations have to live with that. It is important to us to send a signal of departure and we are really looking forward to the starting signal of the two races,” explains Josef Günther Mair, President of the organizing committee. The records are not in danger The participants in the South Tyrol Sky Marathon, which is almost 45 kilometers long with just over 2800 meters of altitude, will set off from the Talferwiesen on Saturday, August 28th at 7.30:XNUMX a.m. for their adventure on the horseshoe tour in the Sarntal Alps. For them it goes up to the Rittner Horn, further to the Sarner Scharte, then to Totenkirchl and from there the descent begins to the destination in the village center of Sarnthein. Georg Piazza, a top runner from South Tyrol, is taking part in the marathon. The Val Gardena resident knows the area well, but is taking part in the running event in the Sarntal Alps for the first time.

The course record for the South Tyrol Sky Marathon is 3:58.05 hours, set by local hero Hannes Perkmann in 2019. Because a small detour has to be taken this year - the Oswald promenade at the Hotel Eberle is still closed due to a rock fall - this mark is unlikely to be in danger, just as Edeltraud Thaler's best time of 5:08.38 hours was also achieved in 2019. While Perkmann is unlikely to be at the start, Thaler is aiming for his third triumph in a row. The grand dame of the South Tyrolean running scene demonstrated her good form just last weekend when, like Georg Piazza, she won the Maddalene 30K in the Non Valley. South Tyrol Sky Trail in the opposite direction The South Tyrol Sky Trail with its 27 kilometers and this year 1800 meters in altitude - the route is run in the opposite direction - also begins on the Talferwiesen, on Saturday, August 28th at 9 a.m. Here all mountain runners can look forward to the crisp climb to Jenesien before descending via the Salten, the Möltner Kaser and the Stoanernen Mandln to the finish in Sarnthein. The course records of Thomas Holzmann (2:14.22) and Anna Gräber (2:36.56) are probably completely out of reach, because there is over 700 meters more elevation gain on the alternative route than on the original route from Sarnthein to Bolzano.
