Everything is ready at the Rabenstein ice tower

The Ice Climbing World Cup 2016/17 is slowly but surely coming to an end. The stage in Rabenstein is the penultimate stop this winter. That's precisely why a good result is becoming more and more important, because on the one hand it's about the overall victory, and on the other hand the form has to be right so close to the World Cup. The title fights in France take place just a week after the World Cup in Rabenstein, so the South Tyrolean stage is a kind of World Cup dress rehearsal.

The South Korean Hee Yong Park travels to Rabenstein as the World Cup leader in difficult climbing (lead). The vice world champion has the Russians Nikolai Kuzovlev, world champion Maxim Tomilov and Alexey Dengin breathing down his neck in the overall standings. In fifth place in the overall ranking is the Swiss Yannick Glatthard, who took second place in Rabenstein last year behind the Slovenian surprise winner Janez Svoljsak. Park has only won once in Rabenstein. That was in 2012 when he won the last edition of “Icefight”. However, since a World Cup was held in the lower Passeier Valley, he came second twice (2013, 2015) and third once (2016).

Rainer has been waiting for a home win since 2013

Completely different with women. Because victory in the last two Rabenstein World Cup stages went to South Korea. Last year Han Na Rai Song prevailed, and in 2015 Woonseon Shin was crowned world champion. Song comes to South Tyrol as the overall leader, second overall is Angelika Rainer from Merano. The 30-year-old has been waiting for a home win since 2013. In 2015, Rainer took second place at the World Championships; last year, the three-time ice climbing world champion slipped away in the final and ended up fifth. Angelika Rainer proved that she is in form last weekend in Saas Fee when she took second place for the second time this season. Now she is aiming for her first World Cup victory this winter in front of the home fans.

In speed climbing there will most likely be a Russian winner. For men, ten athletes from the largest country in the world take the first ten positions in the overall ranking; for women, Russia occupies the first five positions.

Opening ceremony at the Thermenplatz in Meran

The South Tyrol 1 clubbing with DJ Patex at the Merano thermal spa on Friday from 17 p.m. is the first highlight of the three-day sporting event and ceremoniously opens the South Tyrolean ice climbing stage. The opening ceremony couldn't be complete without ice climbing: the fastest vertical acrobats in the world will determine the winner in a show competition. Climbing takes place on the 15 meter high mobile ice tower, which is open to the public from 13 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday the action moves to the Rabenstein ice tower. The competition program begins on Saturday at 9.15:14 a.m. with the qualification for women and men in difficult climbing. The women's semi-finals will take place in the early afternoon (16.30 p.m.), while the speed climbing will then be followed by qualification (from 18.30:8.15 p.m.) and then the finals (from 13:XNUMX p.m.). Sunday begins at XNUMX:XNUMX a.m. with the semi-finals in the men's difficult climbing, and the finals are scheduled to start at XNUMX p.m.
