The Ultra Skyrace attracts 22 nations

The preparations for the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace last almost the entire year. But things get particularly intense in the last few weeks before the start. In addition to the core team, which is busy with the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace almost 12 months a year, there are numerous organizations and clubs from the entire Sarntal Alps area that are briefed shortly before the sporting event and prepared for their diverse tasks such as marking the paths Catering, the construction and dismantling of infrastructure, and much more need to be prepared. The premier route of the South Tyrolean extreme sports event has continued to fascinate the participating athletes since its first edition in 2013. Together with Georg Piazza from Val Gardena, “Sancho” is one of the top favorites to win the day in this year’s edition of the run along the horseshoe tour, which experienced hikers complete in three days. The fastest trail runners are expected to reach the finish line in around 18 hours, which will be in Sarnthein for the first time this year. Participants have a maximum of 38 hours to complete the route. Here the participants run on the same route of the Ultra Skyrace from Bozen over the Rittner Horn and the Sarner Scharte to the Latzfonser Kreuz, on to the Fahnerscharte and from there to the finish at Penser Joch. Shortly after 1 a.m. the winner is expected to arrive at the 2211 meter high pass that connects the Sarntal and the Wipptal. But that's not all, because the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace also has two “Saturday races” to offer, to which the participants always set off from Bolzano's Waltherplatz. The South Tyrol Sky Marathon starts at 7.30 a.m. (45 km/2750 m), which is well attended. Matthäus Zöggeler, Ivan Favretto, Tobias Geiser and Mikhail Mamleev are just a few of those starters who want to reach for victory. In the women's race, Edeltraud Thaler could secure her fourth victory en suite and possibly a new course record. The South Tyrol Sky Trail, on the other hand, is the “shortest” distance with a length of 27 kilometers and an altitude of 1800 meters. The starting command is given here at 8 a.m. and last year's two winners want to repeat their success. Last year, Spartan athlete Luca Pescolldung from Stern im Badia won the men's race with a fantastic time of 2:24.40 hours, while Justine Jendro from Regensburg was the first to cross the finish line in Sarnthein for the women. The 30-year-old completed the route from Bolzano up to Jenesien and over the Stoanernen Mandlen down to the town center in 2:54.55 hours and was the only athlete to stay under the 3-hour mark.
