The South Tyroleans are at the forefront of the X-Alps

The day started with French athlete Benoît Outters in the lead. As a formidable endurance athlete, he set off shortly after 5 a.m., marched 18km to Zell am See and from there climbed over 1.000 meters to the summit of the Schmittenhöhe. At 09:30 a.m. he was ready to go.

Paul Guschlbauer (Austria) had other plans. At dawn he hiked just behind Outters into the mountains east of Zell am See, started - and with this courageous decision he took the lead of the field. While Outters, Markus Anders (Germany) and Chrigel Maurer (Switzerland) were preparing for the start from the Schmittenhöhe, all eyes in the live tracking suddenly turned to the Austrian athlete, who had broken his leg in a skiing accident just three months ago.

After an impressive flight, he landed at lunchtime at Turnpoint 3, the start of the famous Hahnenkamm run in Kitzbühel. Markus Anders ended up second shortly afterwards.

15 minutes later the chasing group arrived. A spectacle for the spectators who were spread out along the mountain ridge. Simon Oberrauner (Austria) was the first to begin his approach and landed on a tiny patch of grass no bigger than a 20m swimming pool. Maurer was the next to dive in and sign the signboard almost on the fly. Then Aaron Durogati from Merano, Tobias Grossrubatscher from Castelrotto, Patrick von Känel (Switzerland), Damien Lacaze (France) followed at short intervals - and all started again within a few minutes. The two South Tyroleans are currently in fifth and sixth place.

However, it was a disappointing day for French co-favorite Maxime Pinot, who was in the lead at the end of day 1 but made a crucial mistake. He didn't manage to land on Turnpoint 3 and had to hike up, costing him more valuable time. He now finds himself in an unfavorable situation.

The rest of the field had left Wagrain-Kleinarl behind them in the early afternoon and spread out in Pinzgau, normally a “race track” for paragliders. However, due to the heavy haze that dampened thermal development, the athletes' flying skills were put to a severe test and many were forced to complete the route on foot.

Andrei Mashak, who is currently in last place, pulled out his Night Pass today, which allows him to bypass the nighttime rest period and move further. He hopes to make up ground and avoid the threat of elimination on Day 4.

Everything is open on the second day of the Red Bull X-Alps 2021, one of the most difficult adventure races in the world, and a large number of athletes are in excellent shape - including Aaron Durogati and Tobias Großrubatscher.
