Drei-Zinnen-Run ends with a novelty

With the Austrian Manuel Innerhofer and the Friulian Dimitra Theocharis there were two new winning faces in the renowned mountain run in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. A total of 580 enthusiastic mountain runners registered for the South Tyrolean autumn classic, who adhered disciplinedly to the hygiene and safety concept developed by the organizers from ALV Sextner Dolomiten in the wake of the corona pandemic.

The South Tyrol Drei Zinnen Alpine Run has been held every September since 1998. And although the famous mountain run has been taking place for 22 years, there was something new on Saturday: For the first time, a top Austrian athlete, Manuel Innerhofer, celebrated the day's victory. And this despite the fact that the state border is only a few kilometers away from Sexten and numerous athletes from the Alpine republic come to the classic event in South Tyrol every year.

Innerhofer completed the slightly modified, 15,2 kilometer long route with 1333 meters of altitude in 1:24.15 hours after he had a thrilling duel with Alberto Vender (Società Atletica Valchiese) from Pieve di Bono-Prezzo in the final part. In the end, the Trentino native lost 13 seconds to sixth place at the last Mountain Running World Championships. The young Klausner Luca Clara (Martini Speed Team/born 2000) achieved a respectable success with eleventh place. The 20-year-old was 7.50 minutes slower than day's winner Innerhofer. Theocharis triumphs among the women In the women's race, after the start from Haus Sexten to the valley end hut, a field of three broke away, including the three “Azzurre” Gloria Giudici, Elisa Sortini and Dimitra Theocharis. As a result, Theocharis increased the pace and prevailed confidently in the end. The 28-year-old from Tolmezzo in the province of Udine triumphed in 1:39.58 hours, making her the only participant to stay under the 1:40 hour mark and ending a four-year dry spell among women without a win for an “Azzurra”.
