Duathlon Cup 2017: New best time on Gitschberg

The spectators along the route enthusiastically cheered on the more than 40 mountain runners and cyclists who came from all parts of the country. After 54 minutes and 49 seconds, Oswald Weisenhorn (ARSV Vinschgau) reached the finish at the Gitschberg hut at 2200 meters with a new best time. He took the day's victory and at the same time also the victory in the over-30 men's age group. The overall ranking at the Duathlon Cup 2017, which also includes the Dead Duathlon and the Rosskopf Duathlon, was won by Daniel Nicente from Vinschger.

The fastest woman was Helga Platzgummer (Fullsport Meran), while Stefano Facchini (SC Meran) won the U30 classification for men. The women's relay victory went to Sabine Unterer and Hermine Reinstadler (Vinschgau racing club), while the men's relay victory went to Johann and Alexander Rabensteiner (ASV Villanders, U30 category), as well as Kurt Wohlfarter and Armin Gögele (over-30 category). Günther Plattner and Andrea Parigger (Polisportiva Bike Team) won the mixed category.

In damp, cold weather, light fog and almost optimal racing conditions, the participants had to cycle from the valley station of the Gitschbergbahn in Meransen to the middle station of the ski area. The cycle route went over the Altfasstal and past the Großberghütte to the Pranterstadlhütte - 7400 kilometers of cycling race from 1418 to 1855 meters in altitude. The best did it in under 20 minutes. After switching to running shoes, the path led past the Ochsenbogen and the Zasslerhütte over 4,7 kilometers to the Gitschberghütte. The last 1800 meters, which were always uphill and demanded everything from the athletes, were murderous.

After the final race in Meransen, the overall winners of this year's edition of the Duathlon Cup were determined: Helga Platzgummer (women, Fullsport Meran), Daniel Nicente (men U30, TT Vinschgau), Andreas Öhler (men over 30, Team Green Valley), Alexander and Johann Rabensteiner (men's U30 relay, ASV Villanders) and Richard Oberarzbacher and Tobias Kritzinger (men's U30 relay, RH Racing Antholz, SG Eisacktal).
