Durogati is fighting with two Swiss at the front

Maybe it was the thought of homemade raclette, or the temptation of familiar places and people. Whatever the reason, Swiss athletes Patrick von Känel (SUI2) and Chrigel Maurer (SUI1) were the first to set foot on home soil today and say goodbye to the Austrian mountains. The two started the day together near the Arlberg Pass and set off to the 5 m high Krachelspitze at 2.686 a.m. It was a challenging climb, and soon the pair had to fight through snow and fog to reach the summit. “I’m definitely looking forward to Switzerland. I grew up there, learned to fly there and it's like coming home," says Patrick von Känel. As he hiked up a steep snowfield, Maurer explained, “Now it’s going to be hard – it’s very steep. There's still a bit of pressure, how to fly, where to fly, when to fly, the same game all day. Good weather forecast, bad weather!” Durogati is catching up But the two have something else to contend with when they come to their home country. Maurer's supporter Thomas Theurillat said: “We are now coming to Switzerland, but as everyone knows, Switzerland is a country of regulations, there are many airspaces and zones in which take-offs and landings are prohibited. But we are still fit and motivated.” Further back in the field, Maxime Pinot (FRA1) was able to fight his way up to fifth place after making a tricky mistake on the way to turnpoint 3 in Kitzbühel. After some good flights he is now in the chasing group, only 30 km behind Maurer and von Känel. Other athletes in this group are Benoît Outters (FRA2), Aaron Durogati (ITA1) from Meran and rookie Damien Lacaze (FRA5), all of whom could pose a threat to the top duo. Late on Wednesday afternoon, Durogati was closest to the two Swiss and was able to pull away from the chasing group. He has now even caught up with the top. Tobias Großrubatscher from Castelrotto was in 8th place late on Wednesday afternoon. None of the athletes drew a night pass. Click here for live tracking of the X-Alps.
