Attention extreme athletes: The Ötzi Alpine Marathon is back

On April 9th, the Ötzi Alpine Marathon returns for its 19th edition. And so the anticipation and excitement are already building for this demanding sporting event, which will once again demand a lot of fitness and strength from the participants from near and far.

The route begins in Naturns and leads to the Senales Valley Glacier at an altitude of 3212 meters, where Ötzi's remains were discovered almost intact in the immediate vicinity. It is an extraordinary triathlon that brings together many athletes and fans who compete in individual or relay races in the mountain bike (25,1 km), running (10,6 km) and ski touring (6,5 km) sections totaling 42,2 kilometers and 3447 meters in altitude to reach the highest hotel in Europe, the Hotel Grawand. Due to the pandemic, the Ötzi Alpine Marathon could not take place in the past two years, which is why athletes and organizers are now looking forward to April 9th. At the last edition to date in 2019, Patrick Facchini from Trentino won with a time of 3:37.22 hours; in the women's race, a German athlete, Susi von Borstel, was on the top podium for the first time.

For those who find the original marathon route too demanding, there is a duathlon over 17 km in the disciplines of running and ski touring. With this new category, the organizers have responded to the wishes of some athletes whose strengths lie primarily in the “Run” and “Ski Tour” disciplines; the “Bike” category has been eliminated. The duathlon can be completed alone (men, women) or in a team of two (men, women, mixed). The start takes place in Unser Frau at 2 a.m. (individual competition) and at 9.30 a.m. (teams), shortly before the fastest “triathletes” arrive.
