Hansrudi Brugger wants to rock the South Tyrol Skyrace

Hansrudi Brugger's football boots have been hanging on the often-quoted nail since May 2015. The 37-year-old has been diligently lacing up his running shoes ever since. By taking part in the Stettiner Cup, the Reschenseelauf and the Soltn mountain half marathon, Brugger has slowly approached the 69-kilometer distance of the South Tyrol Skyrace. “I always thought that I would like to take part in this race: to see what my body can do, what my limits are,” says the former professional footballer and passionate mountaineer.

Hansrudi Brugger has been meticulously preparing for the South Tyrol Skyrace over the past few months. He completed three to four training sessions a week, always on his doorstep, in the mountains of the Passeier Valley that he loved. “I usually set off after work. The longest I've run so far in training was 30 kilometers. But in just under two weeks we have to cover twice as long a distance. I’m really looking forward to it,” beams Brugger.

Brugger's strategy: Don't start too quickly and distribute your forces well

Hansrudi Brugger has also already come up with a strategy for the South Tyrol Skyrace: “I ran from Bozen to Pemmern during the Hornattack and I know that it would be fatal to start too quickly. This shot would backfire. That's why I'm going to go at my own pace and not get carried away. If I still have enough strength reserves on the Salten, I might be able to increase the pace there again.”

Brugger has not set a specific goal, i.e. a time limit, for his debut at the South Tyrol Skyrace. “I have a lot of respect for the Skyrace and my only goal is to get through it. 69 kilometers are not without problems and as I said, I first have to see whether my body can handle it,” said the Passirian.

Anyone who has seen Hansrudi Brugger plowing the wings as a footballer knows that giving up is never an option for the 37-year-old. This fighting spirit will also benefit him in the South Tyrol Skyrace.

He was the figurehead at FC Südtirol for more than a decade. Now the “Capitano” has time for his other passion: the mountains. At the South Tyrol Skyrace (69 km/3930 meters altitude), the 37-year-old from St. Leonhard wants to compete in a competition of this length for the first time.
