The starting signal for the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace will be given in 50 days

For months, the mountain runners have been feverishly preparing for the big challenge along the Horseshoe Tour in the Sarntal Alps. No wonder: Anyone who doesn't start fully trained, with the necessary sure-footedness and a head for heights, and also in top mental shape, has no chance on the original route of 121 kilometers with an altitude difference of 7554 meters. “To date, 29 men and eight women want to take on the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace challenge from July 101th. I am convinced that, as in previous years, registrations will increase significantly in the last few weeks before the big day,” says Josef Günther Mair, the organizing committee boss and president of the organizing ASV Südtirol Ultra Skyrace.

There is a change this year on the long distance. The start in Bolzano is at 20 p.m., two hours earlier than before. “On the one hand, we expect more spectators at Waltherplatz, where the extreme mountain run starts. The most important aspect, however, is safety. On Saturday, the participants arrive two hours earlier in the Hirzer area, where experience shows that the probability of thunderstorms is very high. This means we can react better to possible dangers,” continues Josef Günther Mair.

South Tyrol Skyrace and South Tyrol Sky Marathon start on Saturday

The medium-long route of the South Tyrol Skyrace (69 km/3930) is intended for all those who would like to go over the marathon distance but for whom the original route is (still) too long. The South Tyrol Skyrace is being offered for the third time this year and, like last year, starts on Saturday, July 30th at 7 a.m. at the start-finish area on the Talferwiesen. “At the premiere in 2014, we started in the evening. The majority of the runners were out almost exclusively at night and saw very little of the magnificent panorama. That's why we moved the start to Saturday morning last year. “It was the right step and we were highly praised by all the runners,” said the organizers.

An absolute novelty this year is the South Tyrol Sky Marathon. The route is 42,2 kilometers long and involves climbing 2863 meters. The start also takes place on Saturday morning and runs along the route of the South Tyrol Skyrace, although the race for the marathon runners already ends in Sarnthein. “Many mountain marathons have the problem that the descents are very steep and abrupt. That's not the case with us. From Totenkirchl the route goes gently down forest paths into the main town of the Sarntal. “That should attract many more participants,” says OC boss Josef Günther Mair.

Two training runs

In view of the extreme mountain running weekend in the Sarntal Alps from July 29th to 31st, the organizers are offering two more training runs. On Friday, June 17th, the traditional night run from Pemmern to Latzfonser Kreuz is on the program. Four weeks before the big showdown, on Saturday, July 2nd, training will take place on the Hirzer Hütte-Meraner Hütte route.

The clock ticks down inexorably. And so it only takes a month and a half until Europe's most extreme mountain race takes place: the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace (July 29th-31st). There are currently 255 athletes from 15 nations registered.
