Jimmy Pellegrini wins the Swiss Irontrail

The 42-year-old Swiss, who competes for the Mammut Trail team, covered the 201 kilometers with an altitude difference of 11440 meters in 35:00.01 hours and took the dominant victory in the women's race with the best time of the day. The men's race was won by a South Tyrolean, namely Jimmy Pellegrini from Laag. He recorded a time of 35:36.11 hours in the Swiss Alps.

“The weather was terrible. It rained for more than 30 hours, there was fog and sometimes it even snowed. I ran 125 kilometers alone at the front, then Huser caught up with me. We stayed together until the penultimate descent, then I had to let them go because I had problems with my legs,” reports the 38-year-old from Unterland.

Victory in the most important race of the season

After last year's victory over 124 kilometers, the organizers invited Jimmy Pellegrini to take part in the "supreme discipline" this year. “I was very honored by the invitation and that’s why I wanted to come to the race as prepared as possible. I gritted my teeth and somehow dragged myself to the finish. I'm happy because it's the most important race of the season for me and it ended with a victory," concluded Pellegrini.

On the Swiss Irontrail, athletes have to complete a circuit with start and finish in Davos. “It is the longest and most demanding ultra trail in the Alps. In the trail scene it is known as a particularly valuable diamond, which has now celebrated its fifth edition,” say the organizers.

Top positions also in the Alpen X 100

The Alpine crossing from Seefeld to Brixen (160 km/9224 meters altitude) also took place this weekend. From a South Tyrolean perspective, South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace triple winner Alexander Rabensteiner from Klausen took second place. He crossed the finish line after 26:45.54 hours behind the Spaniard Iker Karrera (25:29.33). Annemarie Gross from Merano won the women's competition (31:38.24). Like Rabensteiner, she also triumphed on the Horseshoe Tour in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Local trail runners also took center stage on the shorter distances. Alfred Psenner (Steinegg) came in second place over 102 km/6121 meters in altitude. Here the race went from Steinach am Brenner to Brixen. Tanja Plaikner from Natz/Schabs was also happy about second place, on the shortest distance of 70 km/4205 meters in altitude in 12:08.28. On this route, which led from Gossensaß to Brixen, Christian Moser from Freienfeld took third place among the men (8:41.05).
