Jung and Kemenater are king and queen of the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace

Daniel Jung started the 5th South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace like a fire brigade after the start on Friday evening at 20 p.m. at Waltherplatz in Bolzano. Together with Philipp Reiter (Bad Reichenhall), the duo dictated the pace at the front of the 210-strong field. After the Rittner Horn control route, Jung increased the pace, was around 20 minutes faster up to the Penser Joch than last year and was almost an hour ahead of his competitors up to the Ebenbergalm. But from kilometer 75 onwards, the Vinschger mountain paid tribute to the efforts of the past few weeks: 14 days ago, Jung had completed the Eiger Ultra Trail and had probably not yet recovered 100 percent.

“I risked everything today because I wanted to break the course record. After kilometer 75 I had a crisis that actually lasted until the finish. From that point on, I didn’t care about the time, I just wanted to finish the South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace,” said Jung, who immediately dedicated the victory to his sister Elisa. Her birthday was on Saturday. “If I had broken the course record, I would be a huge hero now. “That's just how I am... a little hero,” beamed Daniel Jung, who reached the finish on the Talferwiesen after 18:33.12 hours. Second place went to Philipp Reiter from Upper Bavaria, who was 50 minutes slower than Jung. Another South Tyrolean local hero, Oswald Wenin from Ultimo, took third place. The 52-year-old from St. Walburg recorded a strong time of 19:37.39 hours.

Kemenater breaks the 22-hour mark As with the men, the women also had a start-to-finish victory. Maria Kemenater from Sarnen immediately moved to the front of the field and ran a lonely race. The 46-year-old was on course for a course record for a long time, but after 121 kilometers and 7554 meters of altitude, she missed it by less than half a minute. “If I had known that, I wouldn't have stopped at the last aid station but kept running,” joked the beaming winner, who triumphed in the middle distance last year.

Maria Kemenater won by a large margin. Your toughest competitors will only arrive at the finish line on the Talferwiesen in the next few hours. Three-time winner Annemarie Gross (Merano) had to give up halfway through the route at Penser Joch, plagued by stomach problems.

Daniela Oemus breaks the course record at the South Tyrol Skyrace On Saturday, Stefan Tschurtschenthaler from Sesto won the middle distance of the South Tyrol Skyrace (69 km/3930 meters altitude), which started in the morning on the Talferwiesen. Agnes Tschurtschenthaler's older brother won in 7:34.49 hours and relegated Alfred Psenner (Steinegg) to second place. Mattia Depaoli from Vattaro in Trentino completed the podium. “The victory comes a little unexpectedly for me. I was initially in the lead, then was overtaken, but fought back and in the end I am now the winner,” said Tschurtschenthaler, who was looked after by his wife Irene Senfter – winner of the Ultra Skyrace last year.

Daniela Oemus from Kahla near Jena won the women's event. The 28-year-old German, who was German champion in the 10.000 meters and cross country when she was a teenager, set a new incredible course record in 8:32.12 hours. “A really great race. In Sarnthein, I think the whole village was on its feet - we don't even have such a turnout in larger cities in Germany," said the winner of the 2016 Rennsteig Run, which she also won with a course record. As in the previous year, Regina Spieß from Sarnen took second place, improving by almost an hour compared to 9 with a time of 04.28:2016 hours. Third place went to the winner of the 2016 South Tyrol Sky Marathon, Birgit Bracket from the Gherdeina Runners (9:06.37).

Rohringer and Bortoluzzi win the South Tyrol Sky Marathon The Austrian Daniel Rohringer won the South Tyrol Sky Marathon with a distance of 42,2 kilometers and 2863 meters in altitude. The 27-year-old from Gosau won in 4:14.49 hours, but clearly missed the course record set by Andreas Reiterer (Hafling/4:01.41). Rohringer was 12 minutes behind top favorite Hannes Perkmann at Rittner Horn, but he was able to catch him at Totenkirchl and finally overtake him. The Sarn local hero Perkmann came second in 4:17.32. Third place went to Martin Psenner from Wahlsarn. The former world-class natural track tobogganer, who comes from Völs, reached the finish after 4:27.57 hours. “I didn't think I would be able to intercept Hannes. I have divided my strengths well. “I actually come from ski mountaineering, but now I’m slowly switching to mountain running,” explained winner Daniel Rohringer at the finish.

Lorenza Bortoluzzi from Trentino won among the women. The 38-year-old from Sarnonico, who took third place last year, won in 5:38.29 hours. Gertraud Höllrigl from Meran took second place, 6.27 minutes behind Bortoluzzi. Meanwhile, Antonia Winkler (Klagenfurt) was able to celebrate third place, reaching the finish at Kirchplatz in Sarnthein after 5:49.44.

The South Tyrol Ultra Skyrace is still in progress. The extreme mountain runners have until Sunday afternoon to cover the 121 kilometers and 7554 meters in altitude.
