Avalanche accident: bodies of star alpinists found

This was announced by the Canadian National Park Authority. The dead are the North Tyroleans David Lama (28) and Hansjörg Auer (35) as well as the American Jess Roskelley (36).

The three exceptional alpinists had an accident while trying to climb the summit of the 3.295 meter high mountain Howse Peak in Banff National Park in the province of Alberta. The route is considered very difficult.

After the men were reported missing, rescue workers searched the area from the air. The rescue operation had to be temporarily interrupted due to bad weather and the risk of further avalanches. After climbing equipment was found, authorities assumed the alpinists had died - news that caused great consternation.

Finally, on Sunday, only their bodies could be found, as the national park authority announced and sent its condolences to the relatives of the dead.

Three great exceptional talents David Lama was considered an exceptional talent in the alpinist and climber scene. One of his greatest successes was the first ascent of the compressor route on Cerro Torre with Peter Ortner in free climbing style in 2012. Last fall he achieved the first ascent of the 6.895 meter high Lunag Ri in Nepal via the west pillar single-handedly.

The Ötztaler Hansjörg Auer became best known for his free solo climbing tours - that is, climbing a climbing route single-handedly without using any technical aids or safety equipment. In April 2017, Auer climbed the 37 pitch, 1.220 meter long route “Weg durch den Fisch” (difficulty level 7b+) in the Dolomites in this way.

36-year-old Jess Roskelley was the son of well-known US mountaineer John Roskelley. Both climbed Mount Everest together in 2003. At the time, Jess Roskelley was 20 years old, making her the youngest climber to conquer the world's highest mountain.
